Comparative rankings of DTs (Consensus list of top 22 DTs)

I had some unexpected free time this morning and given that people found the consensus ranking of DEs that I posted to be helpful, I did the same exercise for Defensive Tackles.

Using the 7 recently updated big boards at Fanspeak (Fanspeak, Drafttek, CBS, Matt Miller, Walter Football, Jeff Risdon, NFL Mock) and also the NFL.com draft tracker, sorted by player grade, I selected the top 20 DTs from all 8 boards and then sorted them into a consensus list, and calculated the average ranking of each player.

Here's the list of top DTs.  I deleted all the players who only appeared on one draft board, and several of those included on 2 or 3 draft boards who are listed as DEs on most other boards, and who are already on my DE list.

Who do you like?  Who do you think we should pick?

Rankins in the 1st or he might take a shot at Nkemdiche if his background checks out. I know he had that incident where he fell out a 4th story balcony but other than that I don't think he has done anything else crazy like fail a drug test, get a DUI, or a DV incident.

Wouldn't surprise me at all if we went DT in the 1st even though it probably wouldn't be the most popular here on the huddle. Definately a deep class, we could get a good DT in the 2nd or 3rd. I really like Rankins but doubt he falls, Butler and Clark are possibilities at #30 and Austin Johnson would be a coup if we get him in the 2nd. Javon Hargrave as a 3rd rounder we could develop would be nice as well as Ridgeway in the 2-3 range.

Here's what the potential draft availability of DTs might be when we pick at #30 in the first round.  (Based on 7 mock drafts at Fanspeak with 7 different boards).

There is 100% consensus that Robinson, Billings, Rankins and Reed will all be gone.

Nkemdiche falls to us on four boards because of his drug use questions.   I pretty much assume he's off the Panthers' board.

For the next group of tackles, the rankings on different boards vary considerably.

Based on the grades at NFL.com, Vernon Butler and Chris Jones would be the best available DTs when we pick in Round 1, both available in all of the 7 mocks  Many boards, however, have Jones ranked as a round 2 pick.

Kenny Clark, & Adolphus Washington rank highly enough on some boards to go in round 1, but generally look like they could be available.

I'll look now to see which of these, if any, could fall to us in round 2.

I really like DT in the second round.  i imagine there will be 10-12 DTs taken in rounds 1 and 2 because the talent is there, so expect a solid talent to drop. Kenny Clark, Austin Johnson, or Willie Henry come to mind.

On the first chart, note the wide range of projections between Chris Jones (#9, first-fourth round) and Hassin Ridgeway (#14, first-fifth round).  That may indicate that a player with first round potential could be there in the third.

I get the feeling that Gettlemen and Bean will fill about 3 spots in free agency and move up to grab a CB and DT.  I am not confident that we will draft a DE, but I am very confident that will walk away with a DT and CB.

Went to the Warren Sapp school of romance.

I imagine these guys are not on our board--maybe Washington if he slips to the third round, but doubtful.

I think for us to get value we will have to probably go dline in the 1st. I see a lot of players on offense dropping in the 2nd but not a lot of defensive players.

We need to remember that Denver is fresh on everyones mind. Dline is going to be such a hot group this year.

Here's what potential DT availability looks like in round 2 based again on 7 drafts at fanspeak using all 7 of the current boards there.

DT_round2.png.52903033001b654dbfbcaa6bd2

(As noted above, the top 4 all were off the board in round 1, so I've hidden them here.)  Also all DTs ranked below Hassan Ridgeway in my consensus ranking were all available at every draft in round 2 as most had round 4 average rankings.

Expecting to pick a quality DT in round 2 looks tight.  Most of the round 2 quality players were gone as often as not.

Butler and Clark were gone in every draft.  Johnson was gone in 5 of the 7.   These are not players we should count on to fall.

Chris Jones could be a possibility.  He was available in 4 of the7 drafts.   Adolphus Washington was there in 3, but as noted above, he may not be a player the Panthers want to include on their draft board.  Sheldon Day might also be available,

Maliek Collins, Willie Henry and Hassan Ridgeway were all available in 6 or 7 of the drafts, but depending on how they're ranked, might be considered a reach in round 2.

In every one of the seven drafts, there were players at other positions who were BPA when we picked in round 2.  In no case was a DT BPA.  Usually the BPA at our pick in round 2 was TE Hunter Henry, who in spite of being ranked in the low 30s - mid 40s on almost all of these draft boards, consistently fell to us in 6 of the 7 drafts, and who was usually BPA on the boards.

Other players in addition to Hunter Henry who were often available to us at round 2 included:  WRs Josh Doctson, Sterling Shepard.  RB Derrick Henry;  Safety Jason Kearse,

I like all of those offensive players more than the defensive ones in the 2nd.

guys just wait until draft day none of your predictions will be right.

Not trying to predict whom we'll pick.  I acknowledge that Gettleman is in a world far above me in terms of knowing football talent.

Just thought that while things are slow on the boards folks might enjoy looking at data that helps give a hopefully realistic picture of who *might* be available at a few positions of interest when we pick in rounds 1 and 2.

These mock drafts are likely way off.  For one thing, I'm using the free version which doesn't include trades.   This is just meant to give an idea of what players Huddlers might want to learn more about as POTENTIAL Panthers' picks based on rankings / projected availability.

I know i was just kidding, BTW how come its always defense trumping offense ,its kind of going against BPA philosophy. Most huddlers have a defense player in 1-2 round mock specially DT & DE , are  they going based on need more so than BPA. I would like to see a anaylsis of offensive players that could potentialy fall to us with 30th pick.

I started with DT and DE since I knew there was high interest in those positions, AND need.  Right now we have spots/needs for 2 DTs on the roster...

I do plan to look at other positions.   CB, WR & OT will be positions for which I plan on coming up with a consensus ranking and looking at draft availability in early rounds.  Might do other positions too as time permits.

But I won't be doing any more of these for at least the next 10 days or so as I'll be traveling for work and insanely busy for the next two weeks or so.

    • Then why are they paying QBs so much compared to other players? QB are making so much it's harder and harder to pay other players. If a guy plays like 1 of 11 then there pay should be in line with that. Not all QB should be breaking the bank just because your next or a former 1st rounder There is a reason they say try to win it all on a QB rookie deal because after that they can cripple a team on what it can do. I would rather not do that for a bottom 1/3 QB. Cam and Jake have been the only QBs worth investing long term into this team has had I would rather not lower the bar. If a guy don't got the IT factor and it shows I would rather not invest long term into them and keep looking
    • Aho…come out and prove me wrong boy.
    • I mean, I hear what y'all are saying, but Derrick could have been positive without being negative.  He essentially accused people of not seeing Bryce's improvement because of their desire to not be wrong. He could've kept it about Bryce and the team. For example, he could've said: "Bryce has made strides, and we believe in him. This coming season, his continued improvement will turn a lot of people into believers."  That would've been supportive of his teammate and sent a message to the doubters. That being said, his tact almost summoned and left the door ajar for more skepticism. That's my take anyway. Bryce has improved from the bottom to perhaps skirting the line between the bottom third and mid-third at best...after three seasons. We've all seen it. Yay! In my mind, Bryce has still got a long way to go and a short time to get there, but my expectations are top five--at least top 10--always! Yes, I am a fan, so there's that, but I don't believe it's unreasonable to expect excellence. Hopefully the Panthers FO has the same mindset (and that doesn't even necessarily have anything to do with what we gave up to acquire him). That is the lens I'm looking through. Derrick Brown has his homer glasses on. He just needs to be more diplomatic and thoughtful with his words in my opinion, but I get it that he's a good teammate.
