Cant even find a Fred Lane highlight on youtube

Battered wife defense. In this case there was no evidence for it (if anything Fred was the abused spouse), but it works every time.

We men evolved to see women as innocent and pure, and to be somewhat suspicious and wary of other men we don't know. Unfortunately defense attorneys are well aware of this fact. The Casey Anthony trial is another great example. The reality is that a woman can be a evil psychopath without being abused by a man, but men instinctively don't want to believe that.

It's tragic what happened to Fred Lane. However, he was given carries because there was no one else to give the ball to. Yeah, he was solid but, the franchise was young so he got himself a spot among the all time team leaders. My strongest memory of Lane was when the Panthers were down multiple touchdowns in a game and he did the worm after he scored a touchdown. Sorry he is dead but I don't consider him a bright spot in team history.

That's your own loss

Fred Lane came out of nowhere, Lane College, and absolutely blew up in camp in '97, wresting away the RB job from Biakabutuka and Johnson. He earned everything he got and was a shining light during a time when our franchise was in the dark. Fred Lane was a good guy and a good RB who overachieved behind a porous OL.

Not really my loss. He was never a favorite of mine.
