SPARTANBURG, S.C. — Kelvin Benjamin leaned back in the passenger seat of a golf cart after the conclusion of a morning training camp practice in August, his legs stretched out in front of him for all to see. The cart drove toward Panthers fans eagerly awaiting autographs at the edge of the practice field, where dozens of kids screamed, “Kelvin! Kelvin!” But the cart didn't slow down; the third-year receiver was scheduled to ice up in the training room at Wofford College. But Carolina kids should understand why his health is the main priority this season. He spent all of 2015 rehabbing a torn left ACL. Benjamin took a break afterward to sit down with The MMQB and talk about his season on the sideline, why he won't wear a knee brace, and his ultimate desire: getting a ring.

Really interesting comments about DG calling him after a week of moping and getting him back to rehab. The part about the trainers having to break up the scar tissue to get his flexibility back made me cringe. He's been through some poo, hope he has a great season. Not in stats per se, but helping the team win big games in big moments. We need him.

KAHLER: You tore your left ACL last August 19. How long did you wallow?

BENJAMIN: Hmmm, maybe a week? After a week I got a call from [GM Dave] Gettleman and he was just like, It’s time to get up. You had your week off, you had your week of moping, but now it’s time to go.

Would pay good money to listen to that convo

KAHLER: You weren’t in the team photo before last season began and you didn’t attend any receivers meetings throughout the season. Why?

BENJAMIN: There was so much going around in the media and social media about how we didn’t have any receivers. And us as players and us as human beings, we are on social media and we see those things. So I wanted to separate myself from that because I didn’t want the guys to feel a certain way about me still being around. I wanted them to have completely clear heads and focus on playing ball.

that's a Panther.

    • We need a Sam Off Ball Backer to pair with Lloyd. Lloyd is a strong Interior Will especially in Pass Coverage- but that is also Trevin Wallace’s archetype. Need a Rozeboom style run stopper. Rodriguez and Allen fit that
    • There aren’t that many ways to screw Day 2 up.  That’d be them making an obvious reach, or selecting at one of the few positions that we are pretty solid at. Because as excited as we are for the growth and improvement this team is showing, it’s still not an overly talented or deep roster. Honestly, there aren’t really many positions I’d feel bad about. Feelings about Bryce aside (because we are not going to select a QB), it’s really RB (bad positional value) and that’s it. I guess OT too since we grabbed Freeling in Round 1.    While not as high on my wish list as other spots, you can justify WR or TE.     Interior offensive lineman who would likely take over an interior spot either this year (at center) or guard (next for cap casualty of Hunt or Lewis)? Fine by me.   Dlineman? Yes, that’s a highly rotational position and we have zero quality depth.    ILB? Yep, could stand for an upgrade over Wallace.    EDGE? Absolutely wouldn’t hate another option to spell Phillips, Scourton, and Princely.    FS?  Would love to add better coverage skill set to the backend of the defense. Moehrig and Ransom are great in run support but not as good deep. Adding a more traditional FS would allow us to mix and match/run some 3 safety sub packages and or a big nickel type look with a SS down near the line for better run support in possible pass downs.    CB? Could stand to get better at nickel.
    • Sounds like Veesaar is entering the draft. He could always test the waters and pull out and return but without him our big men look like a serious liability. Better do something in the portal. If they don't do something about this portal madness my days as a college sports fan are probably numbered. This bullshit of having a nearly entirely new team every season is gonna get old fast.
