If Julio has 6 seconds to run down field and Matt Ryan knows it and can load up and let it go with a clean pocket,  then yea. Pass rush.

If you go back and watch our defense over the last two seasons, or hopefully you have memories of it, still vivid in your mind...  Think of how many times coverage caused the sack.  Our pass rush has been an issue, ironically, since Greg Hardy was deactivated, and yet, we still managed sacks and turnovers.

Josh wasn't solely responsible for that, but he locked down an entire side of the field.  That allowed McDermott to scheme and help shore up other areas of weakness.  If you have a side of the field taken care of, the game is a lot easier - you can double other areas, you can shade to the other side, you can send more blitzers.  We can't do any of that now.  Josh could stay with his man for long enough to allow rushers to break free and eventually chase down the QB (guys like Peanut did as well).  So, they go hand in hand.

A lot of people ate up that whole "he's a system player.  Our front seven made him." talk...  And it was just that, TALK.  Does he look like a different player in Washington?

You know the coverage and the rush complement each other, RR.  I'm tired of people dismissing the issues that are affecting the pass rush, and a great deal of it is due to our issues on the back end.

Matt Ryan had enough time to read a book, eat a sandwich, or take a nap if he wanted to. We know the guy folds under pressure (ex: our pick 6). He was launching 50 yard bombs to a freak of nature WR. No one is stopping that. Hell, Luke couldn't stop it the year before and the coverage was there. Both are issues - not just one - but it starts up front.

They do go hand in hand, and they're both concerns. The pass rush is abysmal though, even when the secondary was giving the pass rush time to get there they couldn't do it. We could go in circles about this all day.

As far as Josh goes, I never said anything about him being a system player. He's still one of my favorite players. I do think that he will take a step back but judging from what I've seen from the panthers so far, he probably would have taken a step back here as well.

    • Other than the wasted pick on Allar, id love this.
    • Hos production by snap count and targets isn't bad. They must REALLY be tired of dealing with his knuckleheaded behavior which is saying something for an organization that put up with Stephon Diggs for four years.
    • Bryce had his best season this year and it wasn't even remotely as good as Stroud's "worst" (2024, which was still a damn good season). His passer rating and efficiency were actually up this year compared to last.  His yards and TDs would likely have been higher as well, were it not for missing three games due to injury.  So he's actually improved his overall body of work. I don't see any trend downward whatsoever.  I agree the playoff game was a meltdown, but I think that had much more to do with missing weapons and what appeared to be an injured hand.  After his hand hit the center's helmet his accuracy clearly suffered.  It was a terrible game, but I don't foresee it being as career-altering. In regard to the topic of the thread, I'd trade 5 Bryce Youngs for one CJ Stroud in an instant and never look back.
