PFF 's top prospects (as of 4 months ago)

Look, I am not a draftnik and don't consistently watch college ball, but I do become keenly interested once the season ends, so I begin to do some homework. Here are some guys to do some homework on and see what transpired this past season. Some you are already familiar with as a result of general Huddle chatter about Fournette, Cook, Peppers and Adams, etc.

It's nothing special, just names to perhaps get familiar with and keep in mind.

https://www.profootballfocus.com/draft-top-nfl-prospects-every-position-2017/

For our purposes, I'll list a few

OT:

Mike McGlinchey

Zach Banner

Cam Robinson

Safety:

Jabrill Peppers

Eddie Jackson

Jamal Adams

DE:

Myles Garrett

Derek Barnett (remember him)

Charles Harris

RB:

Leonard Fournette

Dalvin Cook

Christian McCaffrey

TE:

Jake Butt

Evan Engram

O.J. Howard

WR:

Corey Davis (my personal favorite)

JuJu Smith-Schuster

Mike Williams (numero uno on many draft boards).

Like I said, this is just a primer based on potential before this past season. Obviously, guys like Fournette, Cook, Peppers, Adams, Butt and Williams (to name a few) have helped solidify their names as potential day one picks. But keep the bowl games, Combine and workouts in mind.

The link is there to get the soecifics. If anyone wants to add anything on these guys, or someone else that's vaulted themselves in the picture as a top prospect since August, it would be appreciated.

As an aside, Butt brings a little extra to the table just for his name alone, but he can play. And I wonder who is going to get the next receiver named Mike Williams in the NFL. Guys with that name haven't worked out so far.

Again, watch for Barnett to be the pick if some of the others are off the board.

Don't forget about Nick Chubb who will likely be available day 2, and if somehow is there on day 3 should be in our iron sights.

Chubb has already announced he's returning

Barnett is a Great pass rusher.  But doesnt seem to have the length that many feel is better suitied for 4-3.  Concerns me some about his run support.  Again great at rushing the passer but doesnt seem to have the power to hold up in run support.  Thus the reason I like a Demarcus Walker or Soloman Thomas as much and they will be available a round later.  Barnett I see as a helluva player as a 3-4 OLB similar to Demarcus Ware when he was in Dallas.

Where we will be Id love a a Adams or Fournette over him.

The TEs in this group (btw that article was written to start the season kinda looking foward to this year) Butt had a solid year in 2015 that some had his hype rolling as the 2016 Hunter Henry.  Howard had a Big championship game to end the year to start his hype.  Both of those guys are great pass catchers.  Howard has been a terrible blocker, Butt's blocking has dropped off bigtime. (Going to the orange bowl this evening so going to try to keep an eye on that)  Engram is Small and no way will fit here. Having a TE smaller than Funchess and KB isnt going to work in this system.  We have Olsen, we need a TE2 more of a Hback blocker role that we had swole bones in the past and Dickson is struggling at now.  So drafting a terrible blocker to replace a terrible blocker isnt doing anything for the team.  One name not up there thats a better fit is Leggett of clemson.  Bigger, more physical, solid blocker who happens to have soft hands and good pass catcher.

Have a good time at the Orange Bowl! I've often wondered whether they serve orange juice at that thing (a little bit of Peach Schnapps might be in order).

    • So the last guy who had the job got hired by his former team directly into a role he has no direct experience in?
    • Hard to pass up millions for a couple of days work per week for a coaching gig in the NFL that is 60-80 hours each week during the season and a more relaxed 50 hours a week during the off season. Yeah, I'd love to see him as our DC but hard to see him giving up the cushy job there if he gets it. And he's going to be a great commentator for the network.
    • Really, I think that is where negotiations come in. If you've got a QB getting you to 10 wins but statistically he's not a great performer, then you say look you can take $22 million or you can try it on the market. Because let's face it, out there, any leadership skills that we're seeing aren't going to be on the table, it's just going to be performance and that lands him in the QB2 market, which is much, much less lucrative (although any of us would love that money).  No one is saying that Bryce will be a $50 million QB, barring something short of a miraculous jump. I'm just saying that if we are winning somehow with him at the helm, then it would be fuging stupid to dive back into the rookie pool all over again. Let's say we do hit the 10 win mark, heck, let's call it 11 and a second round in the playoffs. I think we can all say that would be a really uplifting result and one that should be doable if we have good play. What do we do then? Here's what I would offer if I were Morgan and Tepper. $25 million a year for 3 years, each year with up to $10 million in incentives for touchdowns, wins, playoff depth, being under 10 interceptions, completing a full season, passing yardage milestones, taking less than 15 sacks. Look, Bryce isn't a Ferrari, he isn't a Corvette, or a mid-level BMW. He's probably a new Toyota Sienna that will definitely get you somewhere and bring the whole team along with it, no fuss but not a lot of pizazz.  And really, it's about the destination, not about what drove you there.
