Thomas won't even be there at 8.

In hindsight, that's arguable.

Imho, Thomas has the highest upside out of any DE this draft. Barnett is more NFL ready, but his ceiling is low. Charlton has some issues as well that I can elaborate on at another time.

Thomas has the build, potential, and IQ to dominate more than anyone else available when we pick. He may be a little raw, but he's not too bad. He's ahead of Barnett now on my board.

Watched Barnett closely in his time at UT (obviously). I think he has the potential to be a difference maker at the next level. He's extremely strong, has an elite first step (there's film on him almost standing up fully while our other linemen were still in their stance/hands just leaving the ground), and is good in run support. He also has a good repertoire of hand moves, spin moves, etc. to only be 20 years old. Things I think he'll need to do on the next level is add even more muscle mass and shed some baby weight, and continue working on his pass rushing moves. I don't see any way he's a bust prospect. His floor to me is another CJ, his ceiling is Von Miller. I think he has that much potential.

It's this type of stuff that really gets me excited about this draft (it helps ease the pain of the actual season). Maybe partially because we were picking 2nd to last but the top of this draft seems a lot better IMHO. Thinking about Ramsey and Hargreaves constantly ranked top 10, yet this year there may be a handful of CBs easily as good as those two and maybe 1 of them will get in the top 10. Having the extra third and 40 gives us some ammo too. I think we'll get someone at 40 who's as good as the guys around Butler last year.

I agree. This draft seems a little deeper then last year and the fact we are picking at the beginning of each round helps.

I'm really hoping we don't trade up with our second pick, I would hate to give up the thirds.  With as deep as some positions are (DE, TE, Safety, RB and CB) I really think we can address some needs in the 3rd round also.

    • Canales up first. Guys got their legs back yesterday and started a little slow when they came out Bryce challenged them in the huddle and they responded "Dominant practice for the defense today." Praised turnovers, "beautiful hits," and being physical Praised Moehrig, Ransom, Incoom, and Jones II Confirmed playing starters. Predominantly a young team and can't pass up an opportunity. Emphasized game day routines such as nutrition, body readiness, etc. Plus it's a bunch of new guys on the defense. Bryce will start. Will play them the first two, but starters might sit for the third game depending on how practice goes that week. Nic Scourton has a mild hamstring that happened in special teams. DJ Johnson had an issue with his hip flare up and is getting checked out this afternoon. Experimenting with approach to preseason games. In Seattle they played their starters in all but the last preseason game and what Pete Carroll was looking for in terms of mental readiness to play football. Thomas Incoom has been getting a lot of work with AC Carter adding to his toolbelt. Getting better as a rusher and being physical in the run game. Looking for a consistency in response. 1pt for a win, 3pts for a TD. Defense doesn't like that, but in games if they give up one go ball the score can swing. They challenged the pass game and the run game today. Guys are getting together before, between, and after team drills to challenge each other Job of the coaching staff to set the foundation for our schemes, philosophy, and expectations of what it's like to play Panthers football. Powerful when players take that and the locker room owns it. That's when it becomes our team, their team. At the end of the day, the men on the field have to rebound from a bad play, celebrate the good plays, and keep each other in tune for a whole game. Robert Hunt is amazing. Size, talent, quickness, flexibility. Really intelligent guy that there will say himself there are technique things he needs to work on. Regardless of where players are at, there's a constant learning curve and loves that Big Rob is challenging himself with the position coach. Thinks the digital down and distance can be really valuable. Getting the information quickly will help with the flow of the game. Thought TMac looked great but there were some near misses that he'll have to get in the room and communicate with Bryce on while reviewing film. James Mitchell keeps doing right and his trust factor is increasing with the QBs. If you're right and the coverage says the ball goes there, it'll come. Had some issues at the start of camp but is trending up. Newton or Person: "It looked like today was beyond thud but short of live. What do you call that?" Canales: "No, that's thud. In my mind, that's what thud should look like. The challenge for our defensive guys is can you put your body in a position where we know that would've been a tackle." Whizzing by, tagging with two hands, etc doesn't show you whether you would've made a tackle. That's not real football. Let's the play extend because guys have to be ready to chase sometime where the ball squirts out from a pit. Can't train to say "Ah, it was a tackle" and relax but instead play with intensity through the whistle. Lathan Ransom is bringing the physical style of play that they saw on film. Has been really into the details and someone that they can count on. Has really given himself a chance to start at the other safety position. Excited for the extra energy from a game-like environment that they'll get from FanFest. Used to have four preseason games and now FanFest feels like that first one. Will give ST full speed reps to evaluate. Making plays and feeding off of the fans. Window closed quickly on the INT to finish practice. CSW baited Bryce with some movement and made a great play. Saw it from Bryce's perspective with TMac coming open. Has played all over the secondary that they can count on to speak loudly and be on the same page with his teammates.
