Wonder if that's why we were able to grab him in the 5th? His talent suggests 3rd or 4th. Tendinitis can be a long term injury with no real fix. You just kind of have to deal with it.

Panthers offensive coordinator Mike Shula was excited to finally get to work with first- and second-round draft picks Christian McCaffrey and Curtis Samuel at a weekend rookie camp. He doesn't seem overly concerned that quarterback Cam Newton can't throw to them until training camp.

Day 2 of the Panthers' rookie minicamp about to begin. The speed of first-round draft pick Christian McCaffrey and second-rounder Curtis Samuel stood out on Friday. Not here today is seventh-round pick Harrison Butker, a kicker out of Georgia Tech. Butker tweeted last night the team surprised him by giving him the day off to walk with his graduating class. "First class organization that puts family and education first," he wrote.

Huge crowd for Thomas Davis youth football camp despite a little rain. This is a big weekend for the Defending Dreams Foundation of the 34-year-old Pro Bowl linebacker. It will conclude with a golf tournament on Sunday.

If you ever wondered what Panthers middle linebacker Luke Kuechly would look like wearing Thomas Davis' No. 58 wonder no more. All to benefit TD's youth football camp and foundation weekend.

This would be a cool storyline if he makes it.  Got to think it's a huge longshot

It could help though that not only is he a former Panther's son, but also a Cal alum.  Ron might have a soft spot...

And lo & behold... the long shot DOES make it, at least for now.

Voth's day 2 observations:

http://www.panthers.com/news/article-2/Observations-Rookie-Minicamp-Day-2/15d6f7e0-15fd-4b2d-981a-5b3fb884fa27

here's how it starts, but there's much more:

  • It was nice to see the Panthers give Harrison Butkericon-article-link.gif the day off. The seventh-round kicker planned on skipping his graduation ceremony at Georgia Tech so he could be at Saturday's session. Because he got a good amount of kicks in Friday, he may well just been standing around on the sideline Saturday while his classmates walked. Thankfully, the Panthers intervened Friday night, encouraging Butker to attend his graduation and even giving him a ride to the airport. His competition with Graham Ganoicon-article-link.gif could wait. It's not every day you get a degree in industrial engineering.

  • Like Friday, players didn't have to worry much about overheating. All three sessions featured unseasonably cool temperatures and a pretty good breeze.

  • Because Stanford is on a quarter system, Christian McCaffreyicon-article-link.gif has to disappear for the next five weeks. On Saturday, he looked like he did Friday - quicker than anyone else on the field. Coaches didn't give the first-round pick too many reps in team periods, but he zipped down the sideline after catching a couple of screen passes and also jumped in on punt and kickoff returns.

  • Second-round receiver Curtis Samuelicon-article-link.gif was among a group of guys who were limited with what head coach Ron Rivera called "lower back tightness." That stuff can often lead to hamstring issues, and besides Samuel flashed plenty on Friday.

    • Given that the immediate impact we need at edge. We almost certainly address that in Free agency, not in the draft. Same with Linebacker, unless Styles or Allen is still there at 19. I think the same for OT.  What is the position that we could draft in the 1st round and get immediate help in the first is how im approaching their decision-making  I know ill get dragged for this, but im thinking they go DT in the first. A guy that can play right away and be a complement to D.Brown to wreak havoc at the LOS.   So unless a top tier LB is there, I think DT will be the move.
    • I think people forget that by his last season Steve Smith had the ass and he played like it - and for no really good reason other than that other stars were emerging on the team and he didn't want to share the spot light.  He was more of a locker room distraction than he was worth. He went on to have great performances with the Ravens' but G-man made the right move allowing him to move on from here.  I personally think it was addition by subtraction and we don't have a super bowl run with Smith on the roster. Steve Smith remains a narcissist who I've never seen internalize his own culpability when it comes to his relationships with others - it's always somebody else's fault as to why he was forced to act like an asshole. This video is a product ad.  I'm cringed that either of these two Panther greats are party to it.
    • I think the ‘issue’ here is that we had two guys that clashed for several reasons. In some ways they were different, but in other ways they had a lot in common, and sadly they couldn’t see the forest for the trees. Sometimes when you have two people like that together they are either going to love or hate each other, and if it’s the latter, you need someone to mediate and hope the two individuals are capable of putting their differences aside for the common good. In this instance, they couldn’t find a way to move forwards together because I don’t think either guy wanted to play second fiddle to the other. This video basically said neither guy had the tools to bridge that gap and mend that fence, and perhaps also were unwilling to give an inch at that stage in their lives and careers. So a divorce, while unfortunate, was always likely. Do we win the Super Bowl with Smitty and Cam? Well, it’s one of life’s big what ifs for us Panthers fans.
