What makes you so sure Pryer is better completion than Marlowe and Blechen? Those are developing players that already know the defense.

In this hypothetical situation, I am saying an experienced NFL starter with 3 years in the league (44 games), 130 tackles and 14 PDs is likely better competition than a player with 4 games played in the same time period and no stats (Marlowe) or a converted UDFA linebacker.

If he doesn't want to be a back up for the Jets why would he come here to be a back up?

Backing up 2 rookies is different than backing up / rotating in for a multiple season pro-bowler who's 37 and playing on a 2 year deal.

What we get with Pryor is cheap potential.  The mindset, like it was with Oher and IS with Kalil, has to be that our system can unlock what he was projected to be.  We had seen what Boston could do with the start in our system (one that was built to accommodate a weaker DB group)... it would be nice to see what he can bring.... and it wouldn't cost us crap.

That's more or less how we got Coleman.

Boston's stats are almost as good as that and he only started for one season.

I was not in favor of cutting Boston.  Thought he was good depth.  Similar to how I feel about Pryor.  Could be really good depth at a position we are lacking.

I would be fine with it if we can get him cheap and be willing to compete for a job, but I think some fans are overrating Pryer a little bit just because of name recognition.

We love name recognition at the safety position.  But finding someone so young and having experience is rare.

(1) Coleman had played in McDermott's defense before (in Philadelphia).

(2) In Pryor's 3 years in the league, he has started 38 games and has 2 interceptions and 129 tackles.  In Kurt Coleman's first 3 years in the league, he started 29 games and had 7 interceptions and 143 tackles.

There is no valid comparison between Pryor and Coleman.  One has under-performed as a mid-1st rounder, the other has made something of himself and played very well as a 7th rounder.

Noted. But I wasn't trying to compare their records, in fact, I'm not familiar with Pryor's past. I was saying that we Coleman in on a cheap, short term, prove it contract and it worked out very well for us.

You're right there's no valid comparison because one is a free safety and one is a strong safety.  Coleman has 9 more career interceptions than Kam Chancellor too, coming out the same year.

Shouldn't a strong safety have more tackles?

I don't get the obsession with this scrub.

Because we have a CODE RED at safety and as recently as one year ago this guy was ranked as the 13th best strong safety based on a formula that makes as much sense as any for rating strong safety play.  http://bleacherreport.com/articles/2623986-br-nfl-1000-ranking-the-top-35-strong-safeties-from-2015

Matt Kalil has sucked for longer and we paid him far more at a more critical position.  Justifying that and not Pryor makes no sense to me.

No we don't.  At least Kalil had one good season and we do have a code red at T.

    • I probably would have become a casual Hornets fan if Cooper ended up there, but the NBA just solidified my apathy for its product. Hornets also got shafted when Lakers got cold feet on the Mark Williams trade. NBA is corrupt and that alien-headed Silver is the kingpin.
    • Most analysts from what I've seen are projecting next year's cap as closer to $298M. We saw a $24M increase this season, $31M increase last season, and $16M prior to that. There's also the inevitable cap casualties... A'Shawn Robinson being cut saves the team $8.5M. Damien Lewis would save $9M. BB3, Jewell, PJ2 all would save $5M each. Tremble and Mike Jackson could save $4M each. It wouldn't surprise me to see the team make a few moves that end up giving them closer to $50M in cap space to start 2026. I'm less worried about next year's cap space due to the upcoming UFAs for the team: TMo, AT, Tuttle, Wonnum, Nijman, Mays, Corbett, BC, Dowdle, Rozeboom, Martin, Rhattigan, Jansen, Scott... the only FAs I'm seeing on Spotrac outside of TMo that are must keeps are ERFAs Coker + Demani (so long as TMo's knee is fine, of course). 2027 on the other hand is going to be the offseason for Bryce's bonus option with Icky being the most significant UFA. PJ2, A'Shawn, Josey, MJackson, Tremble, Dalton, DJ Johnson, Zavala, and Bartholomew are the only other current FAs then. I'm of the opinion that they are all in on next season and if it doesn't go well, it's being blown up and starting from scratch. They're currently estimated to have $130M in free cap space in 2027.
