Recommended Posts

2016 ALL-MOUNTAIN WEST HONORABLE MENTION (COACHES/MEDIA): Wyatt Houston, Sr., TE...Houston, a 6-4, 255-pound senior tight end from Tualatin, Ore. (Horizon Christian HS), finished the season leading all Mountain West tight ends with 35 receptions, while ranking second among all tight ends in the conference with 330 receiving yards. Overall, Houston ranked third on the team in both receptions and receiving yards, and ranked tied for second with his two receiving touchdowns. Of his 35 receptions, 17 resulted in a first down, with 10 of those happening on third down. Houston finished the season catching at least one pass in all 12 games, including multiple receptions in 10 contests, as he led the Aggies in receptions five times during the year, including against both Fresno State and Wyoming as he caught a career-high five passes. - Utah State Football

Umm, at this point, I would say that it's almost a certainty. Who do you think we have on the roster or on the street who has a chance to supplant him?

Also, I am a lot less worried about TE2 this season. I am hoping we are smart enough to not use as many two TE sets.

You do realize that Olsen has been incredibly durable for us, but is only getting older, yes? It isn't just about two TE sets but about the inevitable. We are taking Olsen for granted the same way we have Newton the last 6 years. We finally had to address our offense heavily early on in the draft after Newton took a beating last season. Let's not go the same route with Greg too.

OK, but that has nothing to do with what you said about Dickson being TE2 in September. While I agree with your point and wanted a few of the TEs that were available early in the 5th, none of them are likely to have an impact this year, i.e. beat Dickson. There is only one quality TE still available (Barnidge) and he's 6 months younger than Olsen so he doesn't help with the inevitable.

Anyway, point being complaining about Dickson now, after the draft, isn't going to matter. There isn't a young option available that's any better. Go ahead and facepalm now and then post some suggestions. My suggestion to the team is draft a TE early next year. There are a few decent options, none of whom should cost a 1st like the 3 TEs this year.

We've had like what, one injury scare with Olsen since we acquired him almost 7 years ago? Do you have any idea how rare that is?

My last post laid out the entire reasoning for my first post.

We have options besides Dickson, please do not kid yourself here. If you think we are incapable of upgrading I can't help you, and no I am not talking about drafting one in the first round, or retreads like Gary Barnidge.

OK, I think you moved the goal posts a bit, but please enlighten me on the better options we have. I don't see anyone on the roster or in FA that could ever come close to replacing Olsen. I am not a Dickson supporter in any way, I want an upgrade, but I don't think there is an answer. You seem to, so again, enlighten me to the upgrades that my wee brain can't see.

I only see next year's draft and note, I didn't say draft one in the 1st. I said that there are good TEs in 2018 who won't cost us a first round pick like Howard/Njoku/Engram who we didn't have a chance to get. The guys who went in the 5th were shots in the dark to replace Olsen, but still I wouldn't be surprised if one did emerge in a couple years.

I would be all for giving a number of young guys a shot over the next few months, and seeing what happens. Other than the fact that Dickson is obviously done, and offers nothing, he isn't exactly cheap cap wise either (cap hit of 2.7 million this season, seriously?), which makes matters even more baffling. You are almost speaking as if we must sign/draft a generational talent at the position to upgrade TE2, and it just isn't the case. We could arguably sign a guy off the street and upgrade over Dickson, especially for the contract value.

    • All I heard was uber rides, weight trainers, and t shirts??? Maybe some meals too........ What a monster and he should be tossed in a rusty wood chipper!!!1!11!!!!!
    • This is from 5 months ago. It was one or the other. Trade for one or draft one. We apparently called the Jets about Wilson. We also talked to the Seahawks about Metcalf. Drafting our own guy was the best course of action given the required investment. Regardless now is the time for Bryce Young to produce. We are fourth amongst all teams in cap spending on the OL. Back to back first round picks at WR and multiple young TE draft picks now. Very solid and respectable backfield. New pieces across the defense. The time is now.
    • That was just the worst time to have their worst game of the season. One key deal was the broncos guess the Panthers would NOT change any plays or flow to the game. Another key point overlook that bronco defense was truly one of the best in the NFL history. It was the best defense the Panthers faced that year, by far. They were not ready for it, but broncos were ready for the Panthers. Mix in that bad luck, poor refs showcase, and this is the golden boys last game........ Panthers needed to win by 20 and the broncos defense was not going to allow that.  Panthers were the favorites and I believe they also thought that it was going to easier than them destroying NFC playoff teams as they marched to the SB. I've heard darin Gantt say the play calls were to give remmers help, but for some reason the team never did it. During the year they never had that problem, so maybe never practiced giving help via TE/RB, or WR chip. Cam was superman that year, no need for any adjustments...... Until you meet a legendary defense with studs at all levels, Think about it, Peyton was throwing wingless dunks for the whole season, the defense had to carry his corpse to the SB. That's how good they were, not many defense are able to get to the playoffs and win a SB without decent QB play. If you recall the beginning of that defense took Tim Teblows and his non-throwing arse to the playoffs couple years before. That's insane the level of defense needed to overcome.
