Final Roster Projection

I don't think so.  I think at cuts players can go to the IR.  It's what we did with KB in 2015.  But if we had tried to IR him BEFORE final cuts he would have gone to waivers, like Gaffney.

Only players that make the final 53 can then be placed on temporary IR.

No chance for Boulware?

i feel hes been very quiet

He's not looked great.  But there's a slim chance we're keeping things quiet a bit so as to be able to safely stash him on PS.  But I tend to think he's at high risk of being cut.

I thought a true temporary IR didn't exist anymore.  I think it's just regular IR, from which we can bring back any 2 players once they've been on IR 8 weeks.

So butker and palardy can't be in the ps?

Honestly I'd say roll with them than Gano and Lee simply for the fact they ate just as good if not better than their counter parts, oh and younger..

Keeping Gano is utter insanity.  He's PROVEN MANY TIMES to be a kick in the balls for us when it matters and has a big cap $.  If Butker isn't the man, find one elsewhere.

IR rules for 2017:

https://www.sbnation.com/nfl/2017/5/23/15654976/nfl-officials-approve-rule-allow-2-players-to-return-injured-reserve-per-season

NFL officials approved a new rule Tuesday that will double the number of players teams can bring back from injured reserve during the season. Franchises will have the opportunity to recall two players from the IR back to the active roster in 2017, allowing for greater roster flexibility for teams who lose multiple starters to injury early in the season.

What was the old IR rule?

The new rule modifies a 2012 reform that allowed teams to activate a single player from the IR once he’d spent at least eight weeks on the inactive list. Originally, these players had to be labeled as “designated to return” candidates at the time they were placed on IR — and the tag could only be used once. In 2016, a rule modification allowed teams to save that tag until a player was ready to take the field once more.

What’s the new IR rule mean?

In 2017, teams will have the same leeway, but with two players instead of one. That way, unlucky teams struck by the injury bug will have more opportunities to field a competitive team as the season winds down. Rather than shutting down a star player for the season if he needs 10 weeks to rehab an injury, teams can now hold out extra hope he’ll return in time for a playoff push.

Yeah, they changed it so that teams didn't have to designate ahead of time who was temporary. They also get two now.

But final cuts need to happen first. Once that is all done, they can place whoever on IR without placing on waivers.

Wait, the more I think about it you guys are right. Nevermind :liar:

Anywho, Corn was taking first team reps ever since day one of OTAs. Instantly way ahead of Sanchez. He is running sprints in practice and could be ready as soon as week 2. I can't see the Panthers conceding longer than that without him out there.

Perhaps things have changed with now only having one round of cuts, but in both 2015 and 2016 we sent players direct to IR without them having made the 53 roster and without exposing them to waivers, once cuts started.

Here are snips of some of the Panthers' transactions pages.  I would assume we could the same with Elder, and that once he's on the IR, he COULD be one of the players we select as designated to return:

Here are 2015 transactions.  Note that we could safely IR  KB, White and Wallace prior to final cuts.  We only had to wait for the 1st cuts to happen.

We IRed Jacobs and Norwood last season before final cuts were over....

I could buy that but gambling on him being ready by week 2 AND playing short at the DB position week one seems like a huge risk.

Do you have Teddy over Sanchez because of ST play? Both of those dudes look - umm, not very good - as CB. At least Sanchez had a nice game against the Jags (3rd stringers)

I would keep Cole Luke over Sanchez if you want to go that route. Much more upside with nearly identical play right now.

    • Brian Baldinger on NFL Network (per Tim Weaver on Panthers Wire): "I feel like they're building a monster on that side of the ball right now and I think that's how they have to play," Baldinger stated. "They have to play like they can shut teams down this year. I think it's on them to really guide this team right now." https://pantherswire.usatoday.com/story/sports/nfl/panthers/2026/05/22/panthers-nfl-offseason-defense-brian-baldinger/90215555007/   So, do you believe him? Today, May 25, I do believe Baldy without any evidence otherwise. I think it's much more likely for our defense to take another marked leap (right into the top 10) than our, basically, bottom-third offense. In my mind, Lee Hunter is a literal and figurative huge addition up front, and right behind him is perhaps our biggest exclamation point on defense: Devin Lloyd. Lloyd's experience and track record of solid production should be the anchor of our defense that should help lift the floor of the entire unit. No more getting gashed on runs, eh? But, as important as Lloyd will be, the most prolific addition to the defense could be Jaelen Phillips.  In my opinion, whether or not the Panthers can demonstrably show that the defensive squad, and perhaps the team in general, is actually ready to assert itself as a perennial postseason presence lies within its ability to credibly rush passers. Phillips was paid handsomely to produce results. Now I know that most of you are probably thinking that sacks are the key. Moreover, I'm not one that is even going to tell you that his pressures are the key (you know, since Phillips's pressure rate has been highlighted over perhaps pedestrian sack numbers). The key, at least in my mind, will be the marked growth of Nic Scourton and/or Princely Umanmielen. I really do believe that they are the understated X factors that the "success" of our season may depend upon.  I'm not worried about the interior (perhaps over-optimistically so). I'm also not too concerned with our corners, as they are quietly one of the best duos in the league. Sure, the safety position has more question marks, Trevon Moering is an exclamation point, and Nick Scott, though less of an exclamation point, still has plenty of experience. With the infusion of youth, size, length and energy, I can see a good mix that will result in positives from the DBs once Ejiro Evero figures everything out. And, we should all know, a credible pass rush provides the defensive backfield with opportunities to shine, and this is but another reason why I believe that Scourton and maybe Umanmielen will be key to taking up residence in the postseason. On an off note, and as a reminder, if the defense is doing its job effectively maintaining momentum with field position, if not outright laying down the pathway with short fields and such, this should make it easier for Bryce Young and the offense to effect points on the board in terms of TDs. Where the defense goes, the offense will have every opportunity to follow.
    • Its gonna be loud as hell in Montreal tonight.  But don't make any big turnovers or defensive lapses and I like our chances.
    • Canes need to get one of these two away games. Would prefer both but get 1. Go back to Raleigh 2-2. Win that one. Then you only need one of the next two.     I saw a different level of focus I’ve never seen from the canes in ECF since 06.  Also, Montreal has been bad at home in the playoffs. Get on them early, win the game.
