Chris Scott / O line depth?

So until very recently, I figured the drama / question marks regarding our O-line were pretty much over.  It seemed we had pretty strong consensus on the 9 top guys:

Matt Kalil, Daryl Williams, Taylor Moton

Trai Turner, Andrew Norwell, Amini Silatolu, Chris Scott

Ryan Kalil, Tyler Larsen

The only question seemed to be if we would keep a 10th 0line guy, in particular a 3rd center such as Gradkowski.

Now however, I'm thinking we've got a depth issue again.  With Chris Scott in the concussion protocol, does anything change?  Do we keep Folkerts as a Guard / Center?  Can Gradkowski play guard?

If Scott is out for any length of time who do we replace him with?

Larsen can play guard if memory serves.

Sure, so can Amini.  Short-term we're probably ok.

I guess I'm just worried that Chris Scott has now gone down twice with injuries in a short period.  And the latest news is concussion protocol.  Given our terrible ordeal with Oher, "Oline" and "concussion protocol" in the same sentence are a bit alarming.  It has to put a question mark over Scott's ability to be counted on for the whole season.  And if Larsen is our primary backup for still not 100% Ryan Kalil, then, I'd want to beef up our guard depth with another guy, not just rely on Larsen & Silatolu.

If we need serious playing time from Chris Scott we are pretty screwed regardless. Would not shock me to see us pick up a free agent and replace him. Last year he was a serious chink in the chain.

Sure, I'm thinking replacing him is a LOT more likely with him being injured.  Maybe he goes to IR?

If so, do we have an answer on our roster - Folkerts?  Gradkowski?  Yankey?  Or do we need to bring in someone?  I'd assume we'd prefer to use one of our current guys as the 9th Oline guy and add any pick up from another team to the Practice Squad.

Let's take this opportunity to sign a offensive lineman who can long snap and get rid of jj jenson.. we need to make room for actual talents..

Um, not sure if you're serious?  That sounds in theory like a nice efficient use of roster space, but I don't think any of the 32 teams in the league do it?  I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure that all 32 teams have a dedicated long snapper.  You don't play your long-snapper at another position because if he gets injured, you're up a creek...

There are teams that use BACK UP OLinemen as snappers.. the steelers do it & this is not some unheard of ground breaking concept.. it's easy to do what the majority of ppl do & the majority of ppl don't win the Super Bowl..

Teams have a full time long snapper for a reason. Those back up O-linemen have to be proficient in multiple positions to have any value nowadays, which leaves very little time to practice for anything else. Your long snapper has to be perfect every single time too, or a simple punt could easily turn into a TD for the other team. I'm guessing that requires quit a bit of practice time to get the timing and accuracy down pat.

Also, are you saying that we lost our SB because we didn't have a back up O-linemen as a long snapper?

Van Roten looked pretty good last week. We should see more of him tonight. Folkerts,  Gradkowski, and  Yankey all have experience with the Panthers, but Van Roten impressed, especially on that second (I think) CAP TD. He was playing guard on that series, but is listed as center.
