Some Optimism - Only Two Teams Are Perfect Right Now

While I will give you the Bears game, the Falcons totally dominated the Lions today and it wouldn't have been close without WR-aided (and tipped) picks. Both wins were also on the road.

I'm on board with the thesis that outside of the Chiefs, no team has really separated from the pack, however.

And the Falcons probably would have lost except for a very stupid rule.

Yesterday was a strange day for the NFL.  Maybe all the external controversy did have some impact.  London or not, the Jacksonville/Ravens game was shocking.  Buffalo is 2-1 after beating Denver and their defense has been very impressive so far this season.  Bears had their biggest win in a while.  Preseason favorites NYG and Seattle are at or near the bottom of their divisions, and the Seattle defense looked worse than ours did yesterday.  They gave up similar point totals and didn't have to deal with all the interceptions our defense did.  Tampa looked horrible on offense and their defense made Case Keenum look like a hall of famer.

Agree that multiple teams struggling/losing to teams they probably shouldn't, made this week 3 lose at least slightly better.  Falcons going to 3-0 sucks though.

I wont' say it made me feel better, but I do understand that  a NFL season, or for that matter, any sports season is a marathon, not a sprint and its still to early to determine how we will finish.

Won't say it made me feel a lot better, but at least a little bit it did.  There has been a lot of parody in the NFL in recent years and this year seems to be no exception.  The league seems wide open.

I actually watched the Falcons game, and the Falcons were very unimpressive to me again.  It's like you guys get on the road and start having s hit run down your leg.  It makes no sense.

More like shooting themselves in the leg (picks, miscues, etc.) than ****ing down, but yeah, things definitely need to be tightened up. Detroit will be in the thick of things for the division / wildcard race, so not a bad win though.

A lot of us have given the Falcons credit, doesn't mean they aren't getting incredibly lucky bounces again this year. But, that's what happens when you play hard, unlike the Panthers who fuggin quit in the 1st half at home. No doubt falcons still team to beat in NFC South. Looks like y'all will be holding that title for a bit (still don't trust Bucs). And God knows our secondary is gonna get sh*tted on by every other division rival.

We dominated the game from start to finish. Honestly if it wasn't for the sloppy offense, and the give aways we would have won by alot. But  I see alot of Panthers fans here saying you guys look like world beaters, and the falcons haven't played anyone. Well you just lost to the 79ers and put up only 14 points.

I can tell @Saca312 didnt watch the game. Lol & take solice in knowing when you bums were 2-0  against scrubs with no offense the world was fine "this maybe the best Panther D" ever, everybody knew better than that but you guys. Now that you lose "Falcons should be 1-2." Hahaha .. wrong!! Gifted 3 flukey T/Os yesterday still scored 30 & won the game on a heads up play. We couldn't give that game a way, won with defense week 1 on a sack like you guys did for 2 weeks straight with the exception of Tyrod missing a game winning throw that would have had you 1-1. Then absolutely Polverized a O that can score points against the Pack on both sides .. that's how we got 3-0. By being a better team & making plays when we need to.. the only team that's lucky to not be 1-2 is Carolina .. leave us out of your bad times. Lmfaoooo @Saca312 & the rest of you blind hating homers. We're gonna do you guys way worse than bum ass NO .. believe it. You guys aren't better than Chi, GB or Detroit. Offenses that are worse than your own made you 2-0. This evolved offense is gonna be the achilles heel of a good defense.. the bottom of the barrel Saints showed the world who was "lucky" to be 1-2.

Saca may not have watched the game, but you definitely didn't read our boards.

I read it .. doom & more gloom which is like any board but it was of epic fashion & more homer than I've ever seen here. Doom being .. "we suck". Gloom being "this maybe the great Panther D of all time, Denver 2015, etc."

You guys have had a lot of good luck after your super bowl collapse. Probably shouldn't brag too much right now. Chicago dropped three game winning touchdowns and the refs took 8 seconds from Detroit. Maybe you'll buck the trend of super bowl losers with the luck you're having, but you never know when it will end

  • Falcons - Should be 1-2 if it weren't for lucky, lucky breaks. Lions should've slammed in that throw from the 2 yard line, and the Bears dropped nearly every pass to the endzone when they were throwing to the endzone. Their offense only looked good against a terrible Packers defense. Otherwise, both sides of the ball were making mistakes and not looking as good on the other games.

Should? Did the Bears or the Lions make the plays to win? No? then there's no should there. The consistent pressure on the QB in both games caused bad or short throws in those goal line plays. The big hits from earlier in the game caused a couple of drops as well. Part of the reason that the back didn't get in the end zone yesterday is the jam at the line and the pressure on Stafford that caused him to rush the throw  and throw it low. Falcons made the plays to win. There's no should there.

Falcons scored 30 points in Detroit, Ryan had a 9+ YPA & Freeman had a 5+ YPC. How is that a bad offensive showing? Falcons are top 5 scoring team. Made too many mistakes-penalties, drops, INTs- but when you make all those mistakes and still score 30 on the road, you're a good offense.

Falcons are a good team that isn't hitting on all cylinders yet- they have a new OC, new RG and a second string RT at the moment. They'll get better.

Defense is pretty good-they won the lions game with their best pass rusher missing. They are going to get better as the season goes on as well.

    • excellent points and insights.  I agree on Tepper.  I guess I worry that his questions and comments might influence the thinking of his employees, that his presence in the room might add pressure to an already stressful situation, but after watching it again, it does not appear to be like that.  Morgan was in charge.  Canales mentioned needing a center, but beyond that, he was there to serve as a consultant, more or less, if asked.  I suppose my point was this--everyone knew their roles, I did not see egos--I saw empowerment.  As for Morgan--I saw a leader that listened to others, made wise decisions, and never lost control.  I was VERY IMPRESSED with Dan Morgan.
    • Pretty good summation, although I would caution just a bit that there might be a little of over-enhanced expectations. I do agree with the assessment on BPA. It was exceedingly clear they had a specific shopping list. Early on when there was some discussion about the tackles available, Morgan was asked if he was willing to give up a 5th to get Freeling, if it came to that. I think the only way it wasn't a left tackle with that 1st pick is if none that were valued as a 1st were still available.
    • a) That they made it a point in the room to point at the paper and say, "hope the camera got that" suggests we really did target the players we wanted and got them. While there is a ton of editing happening to cut out conversations not related to the players we picked, there didn't seem to be a lot of panic about who/what was going on b) Tepper appreciates the analytics. Now that he has a few years to see how the front office team works together to do the analysis, it still looks like he's hands-off (he's learned his lesson??). He seemed less vocal than in previous years' Blueprints (at least, in the edit).  I wouldn't expect Canales to be overly vocal in the draft room - he's likely already made his opinions known behind the scenes about certain players. Draft day is Morgan and Tilis and Eager's day. Loved seeing their interactions/conversations  c) that's all Eager. There's a great piece somewhere about the analytics engine he built floating around somewhere (maybe it was just after the draft?), and how he's constantly tweaking it with info about the players and input from the coaching staff.  That the post-draft press - for the most part - all seem to be overly positive about the draft actions we had compared to other teams makes it seem like we've gotten the ship moving in the right direction. Whether it translates to on-field results, well, that's a different topic for hundreds of other threads
