i feel safe in saying that we've seen the NFL's peak in popularity.

the reason for the decline will come from a bunch of different areas. there will be no one smoking gun, which is what people typically look for.

i think it will be a relatively slow one with a few upticks in attention from the masses, but overall i don't see much in the way of growth.

i know goodall is trying to grow the market by getting us a larger international audience, but i don't see it every surpassing any attention garnered by the NFL Europe, regardless of the star caliber that is on the field. at the risk of getting political, i don't think that the debate over the flag/national anthem and hardline stance taken on by trump helps any spread overseas.

Soccer is the future in America if the MLS switches to a promotion-relegation system and there is a dramatic overhaul on the youth system similar to how Germany completely revamped their program 15-20 years ago. Not to mention it's very popular with the increasing amount of minorities in this country. When football dies out I think it will be between basketball and soccer and possibly (though I hate to say it) E-sports.

The Charlotte City Council did not get the memo.  Nashville, with inferior demographics and soccer culture, did.

We had to combine two local Optimist's to field enough players.  Some teams we play only have about 12-13 kids.  I will say however that we usually have a pretty big crowd show up to watch.  The parents are very enthusiastic.

We have an easier time getting kids to sign up for lacrosse.  When would  you have ever thought a bunch of Catawba County redneck kids would be playing lacrosse?

I'm going with social media and electronic gaming. Our society is becoming antisocial and weak.

people would rather detach and hide behind their phones and tablets, and play video games.

football like many physical sports are there to channel aggression and be an alternative to war,... but in the modern era people take their aggression out cyber bullying and being trolls,..

I don't think it has anything to do with the head injuries.  Kids are too into their internet, video games and smart phones. 

Back in the 80s on Active Duty in the USN we used to have about 30 teams in flag football, Softball and Basketball for the Captain's Cup competitions.  I remember some ashore teams have two or three teams because they had so many playing.  Nowadays they are lucky if they get 15 teams for afloat and ashore teams combined. 

Ever since the introduction to video games and the internet the decline it people participating in sports has also declined.

The CTE will only make it worse but IMO it has far more to do with kids being lazy and less likely to get out after school when they have high speed internet and insane video games to play.

goal of silicon valley is to take the physical effort out of everything...you know, to make life easier and safer for everyone. driver-less cars is for our own good and all that.

the only problem is that we were designed to be physical beings and when we aren't physical, we become miserable physically and mentally.

throughout the northern hemisphere, as reliance on technology for pretty much everything has permeated, people are becoming much more sedentary beings and the result has been we have become more fragile beings physically and emotionally. we don't have to do anything or really even think anymore. the challenge has been taken away for most of our needs which is nice in some ways, but the challenge has always been what has helped to make us healthy holistically.

Exactly.  Studies have even shown how healthy boredom is.  It inevitably generates creativity.

Well physical games were created to replace warfare. People are still killers though and the new way to imagine killing each other is to shoot and blow things up in virtual reality. 

Thats not creativity, that's an alternative to shooting up Las Vegas,...oops that happened. Becomes easier when people become desensitized to killing.

creativity is making new ships to carry us to other planets, art, alternative fuels and cures for disease.

we like to watch football, grown men hitting the hell out of each other in between strategy and athletic skill,.. but many more and more like logging in and killing virtually instead.

its not a condemnation, it's just reality,.. people watched and do watch movies and watch shows For a lot of the same reason.

everyone who watches sports, hunts, kills on virtual reality is just exorcising prehistoric impulses instead of acting out on them.

anyway, its all just speculation. Could also be oversaturation.
