Derwin James

Probably my Favorite player in the draft and a bit underrated after a torn meniscus and down season by the fsu defense. He's projected as a top 20 pick or right in the middle right now but, stranger things have happened. I predict he will blowup the combine and probably be selected top 10 but who knows. I can say as a FSU fan we have had many great safety through the years but I can't remember one as talented as James. James has a freakist size/speed combo.FSU lined this kid up at almost every position on the defense outside defensive tackle and he has had success at almost all of them. He is strong enough to literally run over offensive tackles(yes its on film) and hold up at the point of attack. He also is fast enough to play cornerback and had one of the lowest completion percentages when thrown at in coverage. I expect him to run at the least a 4.5 but i think he drops if he runs somewhere in the 4.6 range. With the release of Coleman a big hole opens up at Safety and it's not like an upgrade wasn't needed before but this present a unique upgrade of he's on the board. I would be willing to even move an addition pick if need be but,I just wanted to see what the huddle thought of this kid. What say you.

I've seen him mocked to us before.

I know Rivera tends to prefer "knock you out of your shoes" safeties over cover guys.

Analysis of the pick: At 6-foot-3 and 216 pounds, James has been compared to Seattle Seahawks strong safety Kam Chancellor because of his physicality and athleticism.

http://www.espn.com/blog/los-angeles-chargers/post/_/id/23572/todd-mcshay-has-chargers-taking-derwin-james-in-second-mock-draft then that would be perfect because there isn't a better hitter at saftey in this draft class.

I think we'd have to trade with the Ravens up to pick 16 to get ahead of the Chargers and Seahawks in order to draft James. I don't know if a 3rd round pick gets that done, and I don't think giving up our 2nd would be worth it. Would rather have Ronnie Harrison and the extra pick.

    • Dan's been part of 5 drafts, 3 as an assistant to the "last guy" and 2 leading the way. The first 3 with Fitts were pretty ugly overall. Last year's draft, his 1st, isn't looking hot. This year looking like a winner.  He's been part of some bad FA decisions, some good ones, and right now we have the most expensive OL in the league with our franchise LT on the last year of his rookie deal. That's going to get even more expensive.  I'm not ready to crown him as a GM god quite yet because one good year isn't making up for all the bad that's been done the previous 4.
    • It is what it will be. I’m over bitching about Young myself. It changes nothing about the situation to constantly complain about him so I personally am not going to do it. I’m looking for another target because this one is played out and it changes nothing.
    • I’m getting his jersey. I never buy jerseys. But today I bought 2 at the team store. I got a Delhomme and Peppers legacy jerseys. They didn’t have my size in. DB jersey. Its at the top of my jersey hit list.
