Tim Weaver at USA Today answers some relevant questions

Say what you want,  but I think that the guys (Lucas Ewing &Tim Weaver) at USA Today have a good feel for the Panthers, and I always find their work somewhat compelling. Today,  Weaver gives answers to a few questions from his mailbag. 

Here are a few of his thoughts

On life after Stew:

"While it’s clear that Christian McCaffrey is going to become the team’s new No. 1 running back, we’d be surprised if they don’t add another between-the-tackles runner at some point this offseason."

 

On keeping Norwell:

"As much as they’d like to keep Norwell, they already have a ton of money tied up with Trai Turner, and investing that many resources at guard just isn’t very smart in today’s NFL."

 

On acquiring Jarvis Landry:

"If you add up the numbers, Carolina simply can’t make the math work to bring in a marquee receiver like Landry. This is another area we expect Hurney to address in the draft as opposed to free agency or a trade."

 

On the O-line:

"Protecting Newton has to be a priority – but the left tackle spot is the real issue. The problem there is that Matt Kalil’s awful, horrible, no-good, way-too-big contract makes him impossible to move at this point. They’ll have to hope Kalil either dramatically improves or Taylor Moton can step up and take his place as a starter."

 

On drafting a safety in the first:

"The idea of taking a safety early is a solid one and is not being talked about enough. It’s an area that Carolina has neglected far too long and that showed through on the field last year in a major way. Last year, Dave Gettleman had several chances to land a starting safety in a deep draft class of them and he blew it."

 

Like others, they would like us to draft an edge rusher in the first.  And, like others still,  they seem to overlook Daeshon Hall as a viable option.  I don't  know that this is necessarily a prediction or feeling on Hall,  I just think people simply forget about him.

Weaver is the guy who suggested we should take back DeAngelo Williams.

I don't know if that's indicative of a "good feel".

Just because D-Will was a schmuck at times doesn't mean he wouldn't have helped.  Just saying.  Bringing him back was never supposed to be some huge move.

Thanks for this Dawg.  No mention of CBs.  I do not think we are that bad there, with good safeties.  Need 1 and the draft has a lot of good to mediocre CBs

 He's not wrong about that Kalil contract though. G-man really poo the bed on that one. Hard to deny that but I'm sure you will anyways.

Didn't say it did, but he does seem to be unaware of the whole "nobody went to my mom's funeral" thing, as well as Williams taking a swipe at the "keep pounding" mantra.

(plus his general reputation for being an a--hole)

Nothing against Weaver, but he missed some stuff with Williams. And honestly, USA Today has never been one of my favorite sources for Panthers news.

Well,  more than a few Huddlers follow them,  especially at training camp.

Which is fine.

I follow a lot of different people, some of whom I take more seriously than others.

Honestly, for all the flack they get about not breaking stories, the local guys are still often some of the better sources.

The fact Gettleman's single biggest free agent move ever was a total bust does not reflect well. We're going to be paying for this for at least another year, maybe two.
