5 mil to Torrey Smith is no big deal. It's not.

You guys are defending a JAG and none of you realize it.

I learned my lesson last offseason. Im not gonna defend anymore this year. Not sure if the Huddle is on board

In fairness, and before I say this I would've been excited by him, BUT...

You've been hyping up a FA #2 WR, (granted he has potential), who has injury issues, hasn't produced much the last two years, been on multiple teams on his rookie deal (warning sign, just like KB), and wanting to give him (I assume) market value of 12+ million to sign him based on a couple of GIFs that he gets open even with subpar QB play.

Do I love that Torrey Smith is potentially our big WR splash (I mean, FA and the draft haven't even started)?  No.  But we also don't exactly have a ton of money to play with. I'd also be lying if I said I wasn't happy Smith is going to be on the field instead of Bersin/Shepard, opening the field up for Funch, Samuel/Byrd, CMC, etc.

He’s equal to Samuel right now in terms of talent. Actually, Samuel is better at beating his corner at the line of scrimmage. They both are deep threats who have bad hands, except one is much cheaper and younger.

You guys do understand one of the main reasons we wanted Smith right?  Ron wanted an EXPERIENCED WR...we got youth everywhere at that position.

SAME PEOPLE ON HERE WERE BEGGING FOR HIM A COUPLE YEARS AGO . if gettleman made this move you fanboys would love it . i didnt see you guys complaining about giving a 4th for a punter? worley should have been cut so we basically got a fast receiver something we were lacking . dont say byrd and samuel because they are not proven and torrey smith has had big seasons in the past .

We could have waited and got a better option. There will be a lot of key veteran WR's that will be released soon.

Subtraction means our #2 so far is Seymour, and God knows who we have behind him.

Like I said, we’re adding a scrub and making a bad position worse.

We just drafted Elder last year. I bet anything he will be starting sometime this year. He is going to be a beast I watch alot of his film. Worley was garbage. Quit getting but hurt because everyone told u we wasn't getting Watkins. You need to change that picture it's getting annoying to see someone that won't be playing on the team with our jersey on.

Like who? "A lot of key veteran WRs"? All that hyperbolic statement is, is a lot of unknowns.

Not to mention, we could still go after them. Cut Shepard and use that money to go after them. Hell, cut Smith and we save the 5 million without a cap hit, and go after them.

The trade to me is essentially this...we gave up a CB (who most were frustrated with, fans and staff included), for a guaranteed veteran deep threat.  No bidding wars, no free agency drama and Snapchats of "Carolina blue sky", no surprises.

We traded the rights to a guy who was benched, and a walking personal foul (2nd most flags on the team behind Matt Kalil last year , for the exclusive rights to a guy the Eagles were going to cut.  That's the deal.

So we still can sign another decent WR by cutting Smith?

Sure. Smith the player is basically a decent deep threat with bad hands. He’s okay as an addition and no one’s complaining about trying to address the WR position.

However, the value of giving 5 million to a receiver getting cut anyways AND making our cornerback depth makes zero sense. UNLESS we are cutting him and getting that money back, we lost this deal hard. No value at all in taking an old receiver who’s worse at beating press, route running, and has just as bad hands as Ginn 5 million

Expand your vision on this trade. You know the fit is right as a compliment opposite Fun who can stretch the field. It pushes Samuel into the slot. Targets were already going to be an issue with Olsen, Funchess and Caff.

I keep touting this, because it's the big reason to remember for the trade, it saves compensatory picks.  If Smith was cut that no longer applies because he was on a club option. It also bought the team up to 2 years to develop a replacement flanker so look for more investment to be made this off-season. If Smith tanks terribly he can be cut at anytime without financial consequence.

When it comes to Worley, his contract, along with Bradberry's and Seymour's all expire at the same time (in 2 seasons). The team was already likely going to have to invest in the position this off-season anyway to develop a new starter.  Hurney specifically said he wants more athletes at skill positions so I question if Worley (the worst athlete of the 3) was going to make it to the regular season with the team.

It's not some world beating trade, but when you factor in its aspects toward building the team, it is a positive one.

Confused how that response fits mine?  But...yes?  Cutting Smith saves us 5 million. Can cut him and use his salary towards someone else if we want to. We aren't limited to not signing another WR.

FYI--when we eventually cut Munnerlynn and Shepard come June, that will open things up $5 mil.

Been seeing this on the board lately and kinda bugging me...we can two designate players as June 1st cuts, before June 1st for cap purposes.  So not like we have to wait until June to actually cut them.

As for Captain, that contract isn't going anywhere this year, June 1st or not unless we want to pay more than his salary to not be on the team.
