General Question: Players vs Father Time

Most of the guys that play at an age of 35+ truely love the game.  If you are good enough to play at age 35 then you were probably good enough to start at a high level at say 27 or 28 and made a lot of money doing it.  It's not the games that wear on these guys it's all the off season work they have to do to stay in shape and be ready for the season.  Ron does a really good job of giving guys days off and letting the older guys recover, not all coaches will do that.

Think about it for a second, if you had more money than you could ever send and were in you mid 30's and had 2 kids would you want to get up every day and work out for 2 or 3 hours to try to get better at what you do?  Would you want to leave you family in Texas or Florida or wherever and fly halfway across the country and spend 6 months there?  Only see you family one or 2 days a week and make half of what you made when you were 28. I would not.

I'd vote for Detroit sucking that bad.

I think occasionally there are players who hang it up at exactly the right time (Thomas might be one) but I'd guess the percentage of players who time that just right is ridiculously small.

Jordan Gross I'd argue went out at exactly the right time.  Still rated one of the top 10 tackles in the league when he retired.
