Fans would probably appreciate this...

Jerry Richardson was about as accessible as Greta Garbo (look her up, young people). Having someone who would do more interviews and be more accessible to fans would likely be viewed as a big positive.

Towards the end, but for most of his years as an owner his was one of the most accessible in the league. I emailed the team a rant during the 2010 season and the man called me. He would regularly visit tailgates and take random psl owners out to lunch.

I feel dumb for wanting credit for breaking some news to Mr Scot the other day.

By all means, take it.

Credit / rep /pie / etc isn't something I seek out. I just like good discussion and information.

Were you the one who had a friend that works for Navarro? I couldn't remember who that was.

Quite possibly more intriguing though: That Navarro and Jerry Richardson have mutual friends.

Someone else had mentioned that on here before.

Technically I suppose you could say that Richardson and David Tepper have mutual friends too (i.e. the Rooneys).

all rich people know each other.

The one thing I want to know about Navarro is will he make the tough decisions, or is he overly loyal to those that are loyal to him like JR is?  All reports say he's a really nice and unassuming guy, but does he have the "brass balls" to do what needs to be done?

Basically, is he the type that will move on when it's clear something is not working (talking personnel like coaches and GM), or will he say lets give it a little more time to see if he can get things working?  To me, there's a fine line between being patient and giving people the time to get their plan on track and not recognizing when it's just not going to happen.  IMO, the best owners can identify when it's the latter, and will make a change when it needs to happen...no matter what their personal feeling are about the person you're letting go.

The impression I'm getting from what people say about him is that he'll hire a capable GM and let that GM do his job.

His Giants fanhood makes me think he might hire Ernie Accorsi as a consultant when he first comes aboard, but that's pure speculation.

What if he has a great relationship with that GM, but he proves to not be up to the task?  Will he make the tough decision and let him go, or will he have a difficult time firing someone he likes?  I like everything I've heard about Navarro, but that's the one area I've never heard anyone comment on.  What's his track record in his business dealings?  Can he be cut throat, or is just an overseer that lets others do the dirty work?

Admittedly, that's one of my worries too.

His dad is a coach, so I'd imagine he's seen some situations where guys who just weren't up to the task had to be told to sit down.  Hopefully he knows when it's time to do that.

His choice of GM is gonna be a big deal.

I agree.  If he brings in another yes man-type of GM like Hurney, then we may be in for more of the same.  But if he brings in someone with a strong football background that is more of a take charge type, then we may have hope.

I'm not as down on Hurney as others, but I do think his biggest flaw as a GM is that he tends to do what others want, and isn't a strong enough personality to pound the table for a different approach.  The coaches would give him a shopping list, and JR would let him know what he wants, and Hurney would then go out and do whatever he could to make everyone happy.  It's why he overspent on guys JR wanted and passed on better talent to take a player that fit a niche need.

Basically, I want Navarro (or whomever gets the team) to bring in a GM that is not afraid to stand up to him when he needs to.  If he does that, then it will say a lot about how he will be as an owner, and I will feel pretty good about the future of the team.

    • Just another 1st round QB that never paid off for the team that drafted them or traded for them. It's been like this since the SB began. 36 QBs have now won the SB & only 13 of them have been 1st rounders winning with their original team. Namath 1968, Griese 1972, Bradshaw 1974, McMahon 1985, Simms 1986, Aikman 1992, Elway 1997, Roethlisberger 2005, P.Manning 2006, E.Manning 2007, Rodgers 2010, Flacco 2012, & Mahomes 2019. Only 3 have taken longer than 5 seasons as the starter to win a SB.  4  6  5  4  6  4  15  2  9  4  3  5  2 [the years it takes for these 1st round QBs] 5  1  4  1  3  1  1  2  3  4  [10 of the 36 have won a chip with their 1st team that haven't been drafted in the 1st round. These are the years it took them as a starter] What stands out? Only 2 of these QBs have lost their first championship appearance. Elway took 4 years as a 1st rounder & Hurts took 2 years as a 2nd rounder. Of the 10 non-1st round QBs, 2 are 2nd rounders, 3 are 3rd rounders, 5 are 6th rounders or later. Please stop wasting time on drafting 1st round QBs with such a high failure rate. The remaining 13 QBs are traded or free agent signings. Stafford, Favre, Young, Williams and Dawson are the 5 trades. Peyton Manning & Tom Brady also won for teams as free agents on a short stay as well as being drafted. The lesson here is don't waste your franchise on farming up 1st rounders for the league, and steer clear of trading for a franchise QB. Stick to finding that championship QB by drafting them outside of the 1st round or through free agency.
    • I lost most of the respect I had for Fox in 2010. He should have resigned if he hated the job that much. Instead he stuck for his paycheck and let stuff go to hell.    I burned out on Ron too but my deal breaker issue with him was away from football and after he was gone from the Panthers. He may have been out of his depth but never quit on us.
    • From where they were one year ago to now, pretty incredible. I mean, say what you want about Vrabel he is no Jerrod Mayo.
