Quick slants/ timing routes

Why don't we do them anymore?

It wasn't too long ago that we were one of the best slant passing teams in the league. They're a great way to open up the run early in the game, which in turn is great at opening up play action.

Plus it gets smitty and moose going early in the game so the pep stays in their step for longer.

Plus it minimizes the risk of interception and wears down the defensive backs.

Why did we stop? :smash:

The quick release passing game is the only option at this point. Dropping back and heaving long is a wasted down. No team honestly thinks that Jake to Smith is a threat anymore because jake can't throw that pass.

passing on 1st and 2nd off play action may work if we go for the 5-10 yard quick hitter but if we rely on 3rd-10 passing that will not get it done. Anytime the other team knows we are throwing we don't have a chance of completing the pass.

Utilize the quick slants and throws to RB to act almost as a run play. Lets face the facts, we will not hit big plays in the pass game. We are a grind it out, control the clock, win by 3 team. I can live with that but we have to call games that way.

I agree, but JMO Fox and the staff don't trust Jake's accuracy enough to throw these passes without getting picked off. It sucks, I know, I truly can't think of any other reason why our offense is so limited other than our shoody QB play. Our offense gives "vanilla" a bad name.

True, but this would require a coach willing to think outside of the box, and Fox is clearly is not such a coach. We can be a better ball-control offense if we used a smarter passing game as you mentioned, but it appears Fox is incapable or unwilling to consider it.

The slant is one of the throws that Jake throws very well... that and the deep in are his signature throws. (If he actually has such a thing as a signature throw)

I can't disagree with you here, but I suspect alot of this is Fox's aversion to trying anything he considers "unsafe". Remember, this is the same coach that once said "a punt is not a bad thing". If the Panthers could successfully run the ball 95% of the time and throw it 2-3 per game, it would suit him just fine. I'd rather see us run the wildcat, wishbone or triple option offensse than see Jake attempt anymore passes to be honest.

jake's deep ball sucks, but he can still rip out some quick lasers some of the shorter stuff - throwing the ball to a specific point rather than over someone's head where touch is required. slants would be the perfect remedy, IMO.

I agree.

When the guy has to throw a pass that requires touch, it is awful. If we give him throws that require timing and throwing to a spot he can do ok.

Also, whatever happened to throwing to the back shoulder? That was our entire offense when Henning was here, why did we stop? That was the Delhomme to Smith bread and butter.

That throw in bracket coverage gets intercepted. A lot.

    • Best thread of the offseason. 10/10
    • Yes we are weak at 2C,  I wouldnt say C overall just we have Aho and then 3 guys who should be third Cs.....   If we dont aquire someone I suspect we will finally see Jarvis at center this year.   I see what you mean with Freddie, and I agree to an extent I think we should limit his regular season starts and focus on keeping him healthy for the playoffs.    He has been very good in the post season contrary to what some casuals think we DID not lose because of Freddie....  2.02 GAA and a .907 %  We lost to florida because our small offensive D men couldn't keep the Panthers from parking right in front of him.
    • In theory that would be nice, but i can almost guarantee you no one who will be an upgrade will be available.... much less a "stud"  This is a list of goalies who are free agents in 2026 aka possibly be sold at the deadline..... the only one I see that might help us is a retread in Ned.... (honestly should have never gotten rid of him hes performed admirably in much worse situations since leaving).
