I would keep Byrd and have him return punts full time and be back up WR

And we may very well do that, but the other shoe has to drop somewhere else.

I don't necessarily want to get rid of Byrd (if nothing else because I'm a receiver guy), but we all must remember that Byrd only runs about a buck eighty and is injury prone. That must be factored into the equation.

I've also become a team building scrutinizer, so I'm acutely aware that the overall team makeup is extremely important, as well as the game of the waiver wire. The game of the waiver wire can be straight forward or a straight-up game of chance. What it's not is a game of hide-and-seek. Or, if it is, it's more the kind where a parent plays in the same old room with their kid and already knows all the hiding places and acts like they don't know where their child is even though they're looking right at them.

Basically, no one's fooling anyone.

Tough decisions are going to have to be made---decisions that everyone won't like, but should be mature enough to understand. But honestly, it's a great thing because it's indicative of a good draft and other offseason acquisitions.

Things haven't played out yet. Practices and games, and unfortunately injuries may tell the tale of the tape. Even other teams' cuts or phonecalls could upset the applecart.

I do love this time of year. All the daily coverage of practice

Shiny new toys ( rookies) to watch.

All the hope and optimism of a new season ahead

And the fun puzzle that is team building / roster creation...

I'd never handle the stress of the decisions a GM needs to make, but I sure enjoy trying to predict them!

I don’t see an area that would be weakened significantly by keeping Byrd. I always thought he was a “local” hype guy, but he stepped up in a big way when given the opportunity. He’s our best KR/PR and keeps ther skill players from having to do it. I wouldn’t want to count on Byrd staying healthy under a starting workload, but we aren’t asking him to do that. I just don’t see how keeping a 3rd TE or extra LB is going to have more impact and quality depth than Byrd.

Yep, they'd grab him. If not, the Patriots would snap him up.

Or Greenbay who watched him score twice on them last year, or Tampa who watched him run back a 103 yard kickoff return for a TD.

It’s probably just me, but seeing that Byrd won special teams player of the week last year, I don’t think Byrd is as under the radar amongst front offices in the league as huddlers assume.
