About this "meaningless" game and the draft

Nope just a fan of winning and not throwing games for a gamble draft pick later.  If you can smile watching your team losing any regular season game that's pretty sad.

Ya'll do understand that, statistically, you get better players with better picks, right? Its sort of the idea behind the ordering of the draft and the premium put on high picks.

Today's win cost us big.

That equals wins in the future.

So, if you want wins, than losing today gave you a better shot at more wins in the future.

I fail to understand how this concept is difficult to understand.

Better picks = better players

Better players = better team

Better team = more wins.

Today, we got worse picks... which equals less wins....

It would be nice to have top 10 pick with all the holes and weaknesses on this team. But, unless the front office totally blows this pick (which is possible) we should still get an impact player in the first round.

Even if we had higher picks in the other rounds there’s no guarantee we’d nail those picks...especially with Hurney as the GM.

If we plan on becoming a winning franchise and challenging for a playoff spot year in and year out we need to get use to drafting at the bottom of the rounds anyway. The teams than have made the playoffs the most since during the current decade haven’t built their teams picking at the top of each round. They’re able to find the hidden gems throughout the draft and shrewdly acquire talent in free agency...which is why I’m ok with Rivera staying if a new GM is hired to build the roster.

So how would we have "lost" the game today?  Is there a penalty to "throwing" a game?

Also, what coach tells his team "Guys, you need to throw this game so that we can draft a kid 6 places or so higher in the draft to replace you."

While sure, it would have been nice for the Saints to come out and kick our butt for a draft position, I'm not going to argue with the win.  The guys wanted to go out with a win.  I like what I saw out of some young players.  I am not upset at all about tumbling down the draft order.

Some of y'all are acting like we will never have a good season again unless we draft in the top 10 of each round.  It's OK.

What would've you all said if they played like poo and lost the game to a Saints team that played like poo? Playing for a loss is never a good strategy. You have players who are auditioning for a job next year and they aren't thinking about the draft.

You can guarantee we would get a better player and better long term benefits if we would have lost today?  Guaranfugingtee a loss would made us better?  Then I would be disappointed we won.

Statistically, yes.

And that is the whole reason most of us are upset

No that is not a guarantee. There is a better chance but no guarantee. In other words I'll be happy with a win instead of crying about my team I cheer for won.

You beat the Saints, meaningless, but you still beat the Saints. This is a good day.

On side note I would like to apologize for being a dumbass on a thread last night. I was on a college board arguing with Notre Dame fans and some how got confused with this board. I was....heavily....heavily....intoxicated. My sincere apologies to all.

Why does this feel so much like arguing with flat-Earthers........

Logic, reason, strategy... chess.

The difference between us and lesser life forms. The willingness, and moreover understanding, to know that the hard choices are sometimes the right ones.

Sacrafice your bishop to save your queen. Send a squad to their deaths to save the battalion. Lose a football game to get better draft picks. Let the overpriced, underperforming, free agent walk.

You get burned sometimes, sure. But the logic and strategy is not up for debate.

Ya'll wanna say 'let it be damned, I want the win". Well, suit yourselves. I'm out of breath trying to teach why sacraficing the now for the future is important.

So I was correct. It's not guaranteed and just better odds.  No need for the insults.

I can't control what happens on the field or who the team picks in draft.  I can control whether I'm happy with a win and settle for 16th pick instead of being upset my team won.

But since you have decided discussing something trivial as what an NFL team today deserves throwing insults out, I'm bowing out of discussing things with you since you seem a little emotional.

Have a good night.

    • I watch a ton of NFL because the product on the field is still the best on the planet. But, that will only get you so far. US sports fans are an aging crowd so there will be a dramatic drop when the Boomers die off and the GenXers do, as well.  The Millennials will probably be the last major generation that watches sports in high numbers.
    • The Bryce stanning is relentless.    Cam’s team won two games the previous season and legit was picking 1st. Bryce’s team won 7 games the previous season and was actually in playoff contention. And legit earned the 9th overall pick.  If anything made that team worse in 2023 than in 2022 it was Bryce. Come on. And missing DJ, I’ll concede that.
    • I see the logic in what you're saying, but I'd also say there were games with a bit more talent on the roster that some of the L's are actually W's.  AZ - We don't get off to a crappy start and if this game is later in the season when Bryce is a bit more comfortable, I think we beat the Cards NO - At least one of, if not both of these games would've gone our way SF - Perfect opportunity to snag a win on the road that Purdy handed to us, but we couldn't do anything offensively TB - Final game was winnable in Tampa  All this to say, I think 8 wins is about where we were at in 2025 if you take the games we barely won and combined them against the games that we barely lost.  Add 5-6 new pieces in FA and the draft. We went head to head and almost beat the Rams in a meaningful playoff game that gave a lot of the youth that experience to take into 2026 and beyond, and I do think 10-11 wins is achievable next year.  Not guaranteed, but much the way folks thought we could get to 8 or 9 wins this year as the ceiling, I think 10-11 is the new ceiling for next year.
