While you all were watching the ball, I was watching the LT Williams.  To me, our season rests on that position.  Facing veteran Jerry Hughes and former Clemson Tiger Shaq Lawson.  I rate all of the 19 snaps he was in for- 

He earned a "no factor" (if it was difficult to tell if he met his objective or not)

He earned a "minus" if he was defeated--did  not make a block, gave up a pressure, etc.

He earned a "plus" if he accomplished his objective

 

First Quarter

 

1.       Williams Shoves end (Hughes) to the outside and play bootlegs away from him. No factor. 0

2.       DE Hughes attempts inside pressure; Williams gets inside help from CAP.  Would have been burned without help, but he may have known help was there.  Kyle Allen misses Samuel who was wide open. -

3.       Williams wins pass protection battle vs. DE Hughes, but Oliver swats Allen pass down after ripping Paradis’ helmet off. +

While it is hard to say if Williams needed the help, he did not have a secondary option to block, so I will grade Williams 0, -, + on the first series.

1.       Play away, Williams takes good angle, loses his feet.  CAP for about 6 to Rt. 0 factor

2.       Williams reaches LB and CAP gets 11.  +

3.       Williams stonewalls #91.  Good job. +

4.       Williams nice job vs. DE Hughes.  Moore for about 8 (pass) +

5.       Williams blocks inside on wheel route to Samuel.  No factor 0

6.       4th and 2:  Williams stymies Hughes on bull rush---Allen able to scramble for first down. +

7.       Williams reaches second level (#49) as CAP runs opposite side.  +

END OF FIRST QUARTER  Grade: 

Second Quarter:

 

1.       Williams forces DE Hughes around Allen.  +

2.       Williams catches DE Hughes and gets bull rushed into backfield.  -

3.       Williams lets DE Hughes get too close to Allen on pass to Smith.   -

4.       Williams stops DE Hughes’ momentum and drives him behind Allen.  Completion for 8. +

5.       4th and 2—Williams gives into Hughes’ pressure and Allen is tripped up for a sack,  but Hughes in his face disrupted the play.  –

6.       Williams reaches LB on run to right—nice.  Turner flagged for holding.  #90 (Lawsen) at DE.  +

7.       William shuts down pressure from #90.  Nice, wide foundation, good hands.+

8.       Williams slaps Lawson into Kyle on Screen.  Blocked by Lawson (#90) no factor.  Allen needs to be smarter. No factor 0

9.       Lawssn #90 delayed rush-Williams not fooled picks him up.  Nice patience. +

END

TOTAL RATING

·         No factor:  4 plays

·         negative factor: 4 plays

·         positive factor: 11 plays

I counted 1 pressure (possibly 2, but the QBs were partially to blame) on about 14 passes. 

(note: Hughes seems to have 2 strategies—bull rush or speed rush outside.  Williams is doing OK at this point—better than what I saw last from the OT position last year.)

 

I would say it was a good outing--not great, not poor--better than average or expected.

Good review.  The offensive line had some dumb penalties, but the QB played trumped everything else (in a bad way).

This game really has no bearing on the regular season to me other than Rivera wanted to evaluate the backup QB's and ILB's behind Luke & Shaq, and they failed miserably.

If no one gets injured, who cares... But that's not the reality of football, and right now our depth looks bad at both those positions

Figurative Language.   

You cannot scheme around the entire left side of the OL.  Do you know who the LG is?

Thanks.  I was really concerned about Williams at LT going in to this game.  I feel better, but far from confident.

      There was some pretty egregious missed calls vs the Chiefs in the Lions game, especially Kelce. The completion where he clearly used the ground to catch the ball. The hold in front of the ref as Pacheco ran by where the defender was trying to turn around and couldnt because Kelce had him by the jersey. Mahomes openly taunting after scoring a TD. 0 penalties after double digit the week before. Cmon.

      People get trade happy and look at resources as barter items. They fail to see them as resources to be used to our benefit rather than someone else's. Right now, Chuba and Rico are massive benefits to us and a strong rushing attack so greatly benefits any passer, much less a young one like Bryce still is.  And the better our running game, the more our offense can eat up the clock, the less time our defense is on the field. And that is priceless, too. Don't mess with the running game. Don't mess with the receivers. Maybe look at our O-line and think we may have hit on something good during these injuries. Look at our D-line and seem some strength evolving there. Our secondary has its good spots and some that are still developing. Our linebacking corps did well this last outing. Our special teams are on a major upswing as of this past week. Heck, even our QB is showing us a little something right now that we can build on. Perhaps putting out a yard sale sign right now might be less advantageous than looking at the team and saying, "You are all part of something good that is happening. We want to see that continue to grow."
