Sooooooooo leaving Moton at RT and putting Williams back at LT?

We will see. I'm not sure who could be worse than William's at LT. I'd like to at least see Moton there but they may go with Daley. Larson is the only other OLman I dont want to get a chance at LT. Other than that, open pool and good luck.

I get the Hurney criticism, he's earned some, but the depth chart is set by the head coach. That's his. So is somehow thinking it's a good idea to attempt to convert awful defensive linemen into offensive tackles entrusted with protecting your franchise quarterback.

Hurney had nothing to do with it.

I am pretty sure that was Gettleman's brain at work and 1000% certain it wasn't Hurney.

Google had it, I looked up the Byron Belle and Chandler fiasco a few years later as I loved to pick on Gettleman and that was the first real headscratcher I remember. And it was a headscratcher. He was pontificating Gettleman style about how was going to solve things.

It was a clue as to what was to come for a while at that position. Remember how we never had a DT worth a crap after Jenkins and Buck? LOT was the new DT.

We had Oher shortly thereafter.

And position switching to keep a guy from being cut is Rivera's thing. He went to Chandler and suggested he try out OL after the team drafted Lotululei and Short.

Later did the same thing with Sione Fua. Also switched Charles Godfrey back and forth a couple of times trying to keep him on board.

I have to imagine the scenario played out something like this:

Panthers: Hey Darryl, can you play LT? We aren't sure Little will be ready and Moton looked really good in your absence.

Darryl: Let me check with my agent.

Agent: Hell yeah!!! All the big money is at LT!!! Tell them you'll sign a 1-year deal so you can cash in at the end of the year.

Darryl->Panthers: Yeah, I'd be a great LT. You'll want to sign me long-term after you see what I can do.

Forward in time to Week 3...

Darryl: I really feel more comfortable on the right side.

Agent: @%$!@$#!%!@

Panthers: You can fill in for Trai while he recovers from injury. We're going to miss you next year. Maybe.

I might be the only one, but I do kinda wonder if he's hinting.

Yeah and we were there because he basically rushed Gross into retirement.

We got one good year from Oher and here we still sit. It turned into a cursed position. But, I am not one who wants to shove a square peg college LT into a 1st round hole. They just are not a sure thing any more, not like when we took Gross he was the safe pick. You will never see me criticize a GM, even Gettleman, over passing on a T high. Even when he passed on Bakhtiiri (IIRC).

So, where did you learn that Rivera went to Chandler with that? I have never heard it, that I remember, and I used to consume Panthers news.

I remember it at the time. Chandler told reporters he was expecting to be cut after seeing two big defensive tackles grafted with high picks, till one day Rivera walked up to him and said "hey, what about trying this"

And again, that's a pattern with Ron. He loves "try hard" guys, which is why he did the same thing with Godfrey and Sione Fua.

Granted, in the case of Godfrey it may also have been trying to justify the big contract he'd been mistakenly given. Speculation at the time was that Gettleman wanted to cut ties with Godfrey but Rivera was hoping to find a way to keep him.
