I've seen enough...Leave Martin as starter.

You do realize that NFL coaches do not listen to draft "gurus".

Name me one NFL head coach who cares what Mel Kiper thinks, and I'll show you a loser.

Whether they listen to them or not is irrelevent. The point is that their respective skill stets translated to those positions. Godfrey was not very good in man to man coverage and Martin actually did play some corner in college and did very well at it. And I'm not sure what makes people think that Godfrey can play corner if he can't get himself in the right position at FS, and he would still need to be a good tackler as a CB too.

I don't know if Godfrey can play at corner in our scheme, but I won't say he can't until I see that he can't.

But if you play any position on the defense and you can't tackle, yea then I don't know what to say about that, just sad.

I do know that a 7th rounder had more talent at CB than Martin. Seems he is actually better suited at FS.(although its just one game)

I just hope our second rounder turns out to be a beast at FS. Beast > Bust for sure.

I don't know what some of you guys saw out there, saying that Martin did not look freakin' awesome. His help over the top was perfect, not only was he in position but the timing of his help was also perfect. That is usually the aspect of deep safety help that takes young safeties awhile to get acclimated to because the speed of the NFL is overwhelming. He tackled well, wrapping up and keeping his shoulders square, not just throwing his shoulder as Godfrey is prone to do.

I know that he could come out next week and Brees could make him look like a rookie, but this week give the man his props. He played really well.

I am not a proponet of someone loosing his job because of injury, but I have a feeling that Martin will get a few more snaps with first team D this week and we will see him next Sunday. The kid is good.

I mean...the guy played well. But he played well in ONE game. I think he deserves another chance at starting, but lets not get ahead of ourselves here...could be a case of beginners luck and he loses the game for us with blown coverage or a missed tackle next game. He's not Ed Reed quite yet....

Still, even should he play only half as well the rest of the season as he did yesterday.... it's still a hell of an upgrade over what we've seen from Godfrey so far.

The kid deserves another shot at starting. Even if he makes some rook mistakes, I say start him for multiple games. He seems very comfortable back there, and I like what I've seen so far. But, you're right, he's not Ed Reed... yet. :D

It is shocking that a guy who played 99% of his college games as a FS would be better there than CB. Who woulda thunk it?

Ok, lets clear this up.

The reason that Godfrey was projected as and was drafted to be a FS in the NFL is because he is tall, has good Straight Line Speed, is not fluid in the hips, and is not much of a ballhawk. He was good enough and had enough upside and the right physical traits to possibly turn into a good FS but does not possess the ability to turn and run with most WR in the NFL. His best chance of ever starting was to turn himself into a FS it is the position that would maximize his strengths and minimize his deficiencies.

Martin, is a hell of a ballhawk, as we have seen. He has great speed and has the fluidity to turn and run, he has great vision and instincts. The position of maximum impact for him on the field would be DB. He is a great FS, but a DB has the potential to have more impact on a game than a FS. We drafted him to be a DB because we had a void to fill at Nickel, with the outstanding play of Munnerlynn he was no longer needed in that capacity and we could move him back to FS were he may be more comfortable and better right now.

They might have reached a little to grab these 2 guys when they did but pretty much any team that drafted either one of these guys was going to try and convert them. Which is the reason they both went when they did in the draft.

    • There are several posters that only post negative at all times.   8 wins is a big jump from 5 and we still have 2 games.  Jaguars have a much more talented roster than us and have underachieved for years.
    • All of this noise is just setting us up to lose Week 18 and proclaim life's not fair. If there's one thing I know in my 30+ years of watching the Hornets and Panthers, is that the bad guy always wins in the end. A team can be falling apart internally but we will still lose to them. A team's fanbase can be extra shitty and cocky and they will just win anyway. It always happens
    • Well even if we took diverging paths getting there...our overall assessment of Shough is the same (bolded) lol so I guess that's what matters.  What you call "playing at a level that looks like a veteran starter" is the same thing I'm referencing when I talk about his poise.  Although I still wonder how truly "bad" of a team the Saints are.  Their defense is middle-of-the-road, and their offense does have some good pieces (Olave, Juwan Johnson) outside of running back which is the position most everyone agrees is relatively plug-and-play.  I'm not going to pretend to know anything about the majority of NFL team's o-lines lol but I'm assuming Saints are not great there, although Shough's pressure % seems to have been quite low (and steadily improving) over the last four weeks (20 -> 16.7 -> 15.0 -> 13.0) so maybe they've been playing better as of late, or perhaps Shough himself deserves credit for that.   Some of the language I'm hearing about Shough, including talking about how he's way above league average in several categories, makes it sound like Shough is having a rookie season on par with like a CJ Stroud who established himself as basically a Top 5-10 QB his rookie season.  Maybe that's on me though, I don't mean to attribute anything to you that I'm sure you don't agree with.
