I don't think Sam Mills stature or legacy with the team should have any bearing on whether Sam Mills III remains employed.  SM3 needs to do what he is being paid to do.

Now, that being said, he actually has two titles:  Defensive Line Coach and Game (Clock / Situation) Manager.

Our D Line isn't great.  To his (and their) defense, we went in to the year teaching techniques and strategies to play a base 3-4.  With all our injuries, we're playing a whole lot more 4-3.  Effectively, because of injuries, our defense (which includes the line) is in the worst possible position.  They trained and prepared to play a 3-4 scheme which was new to all of them, and then part way thru the season, we (sort of) went back to the 4-3.  It's a damn mess.

I can however say that our clock management has been a lot better this season.  We're getting to the end of halves with all our time outs available.  Our offense is getting to the line with lots of time on the clock to read and force the defense to declare.  While a lot of people went nuts about it, going for two against GB was the right call.  Whether this is due to SM3's influence or not, I can't say.  I can only say that it's better.

My honest opinion, SM3 is fine as an assistant.  He seems to be doing ok with situation management.  We need Eric Washington back as our D Line coach.

The defense just sucks..... they have totally castrated Luke, have a bunch of lineman that can't stop the run at all, and guys that can't tackle in the secondary. Screwed the pooch in all aspects. The Defense is a shell of itself from seasons past.

It really is that simple.

Tepper runs merit based organizations.  The Mills name will not make a difference to Tepper as he makes his evaluations.

Washington actually was supposed to be handling the D-line coaching duties when he was demoted, but both he and Mills kept their titles.

At least that was what was said last year. How it's actually structured right now is kind of a question.

If it's Washington, it definitely pokes another hole in his reputation as this was supposed to be his specialty.

    • Great article on all the Lil Canes attending their debutantes ball. Walt with a great breakdown of all the rookies, as always, and I'm a huge fan of his team coverage, he is truly a treasure, but as a fan of mixed metaphors and superfluous language which some might ignorantly refer to as a "run-on sentence" I never really understood what that mean or where to put the comma after a quote in the middle of a sentence, but holy poo Walt, this is a gem, "While there's a long road left in front of them left to determine whether or not they'll have that same success on the blue line again, the beginning stretch of the journey has been thrown a wrench, and the story on defense has been the emergence of up-and-comers forced into becoming lineup regulars." , bravo, take a bow, sir!
    • How do I activate said Krispy Kreme deal? I'm stoned man you can't be playing with me about this...
    • When the broadcast showed the two benches side by side during the last TV timeout, it was pretty obvious the whole operation is a shitshow. If I was the owner, I would play that clip, with commentary, on the jumbotron at MSG as I fired the coach, GM, President, the whole lot. Bring in your AHL leadership team, wholesale, to finish out the season and start from scratch next year.  Can't fire all the players and fold the season. But, hopefully decapitating the zombie will light a fire under the body and burn out the cancer of the roster. (It makes sense if you don't think about it...) There are obviously issues on the roster. But, you can't have the entire coaching staff completely tuned out with 5 minutes left in a 2 goal game this early in the season. And you can't trust the people that hired them to hire the next staff. If you trust your AHL GM/Scouts, let them run the deadline firesale.   ...     Please don't let the owner read any of this. Because, this poo is hilarous!
