Changing the coaching and GM philosophy

I would offer the Indianapolis Colts as a case study for the idea that building a solid OL, and getting a smart head coach can allow you to survive, perhaps even thrive, even when your all world quarterback gets hurt (or suddenly retires).

Is 6-4 “thriving”, meanwhile 5-5 sucks or something? We had identical records before this past week. We beat all three of their division opponents so I’m sure we could thrive in that terrible division as well. Their only good win was against Kansas City, and that was on the back of their defense, not their offense. They just recently lost to the 2-8 Dolphins, putting up 12 points. Not a great testament to their offensive-minded head coach with a stud OL. Yeah we just got destroyed by the 3-7 Falcons but they’re clearly in the midst of some torrential resurgence, having just whooped one of the NFC favorites Saints. Plus that was a divisional game which are always tougher...the Colts lost to Miami lol.

I’m not saying we’re better than the Colts, but I’m not sure how you can prop them up and praise their coach, offensive philosophies, etc. as a model for us to emulate, while our seasons have almost eerily followed the same trajectory.

Speaking of Belichick, I can't stand the guy but he's really cementing his coaching greatness this season - as if that was even in question at this point. Honestly, Father Time has caught Tom Brady. Don't get me wrong, he's still a good QB, but he's not "Tom Brady" anymore. His yards per attempt haven't been this low since '06 and he has by far the lowest TD% of his career.  But it doesn't matter because Belichick has built an absolutely dominant defense to protect him.

Good point. Let's not forget, they lost to the damn Dolphins less than two weeks ago and this year's Dolphins are absolutely putrid.

As long as they're not facing Lamar Jackson.

That is the one little flaw in the almighty armor. Belichick has always had trouble defending against mobile quarterbacks

The big difference is the colts have not come out all year and looked completely unprepared to play their opponent. The most they have lost by is 7 points, we have been blown out twice and looked completely lost both games.

They lost to the phins by 4 points with Brian Hoyer at QB, their 3rd string QB, and he threw 3 ints.

Unfortunately for us, Rivera isn't much better at evaluating coaching talent than he is player talent.

Laughs in Richard Rodgers

Ron’s a decent coach and can turn a shitty franchise around into a decent one, maybe even a contender for a season if all the cards fall in his favor.  He’s not the kind of guy that can will a team to sustained success.  I feel like Linville hit the nail on the head.

Was that with Brissett or Hoyer though?

The problem with just pointing to our record is that when you look deeper, we win against bad teams but lose to the good ones (and one terrible one).

Knowing that, the rest of our schedule doesn't really do us many favors.

Watching teams try to deal with that guy this season is like watching teams try to deal with Cam in 2015. Unless the NFL turns a blind eye to a team flagrantly violating emphasized rules of the game to just beat the hell out of the guy, I don't know how anyone is gonna deal with him this season.

They let it happen to Cam so you ever know...

I don't think it matters. There's really no excuse for losing to this year's Dolphins.

Same thing as with Cam though, you know he can't do that forever.

I'm going to be watching how they coach him in the years to come. If they just exploit his ability like we did Newton, eventually it'll be unsustainable.
