NFL: Russell Wilson isn't sure he's getting enough calls

There’s a belief that some quarterbacks get treated differently than others. That belief was bolstered by the alleged remark from now-retired referee to Ed Hochuli to Panthers quarterback Cam Newton that he wasn’t “old enough” to draw a penalty for a late hit.

On Thursday, Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson, who is now 31, was asked whether he thinks the rules apply differently to him.

“I don’t know,” Wilson said in response to the question at his midweek press conference. “I don’t want to get into that too much with all the stuff behind it. I definitely try to get down. I try to slide. I try not to take wicked hits or anything like that. Sometimes, you get a little elbow or a little extra. I don’t know. I want to play the game tough. I’m going to play it tough and also try to play it smart. It’s their decision to make it. Those are a couple in there that seemed a little bit late.”

So “I don’t know” basically means “yes.” And it’s odd that there does indeed seem to be a seniority-driven effort to protect certain quarterbacks, while letting others fend for themselves.

Russell Wilson wonders whether the rules apply to him differently than other quarterbacks

Don’t get me started.

The rules are the rules, and should apply evenly to everyone.

That is literally he definition of fair play.

Officials entire job is to enforce the rules in a way that is consistent and fair. It is beyond obvious they do not do this. Which players are favored and how much is debatable, what is not is whether they are doing it the way it should be done. It’s basically absurd on its face to say that all qb’s are officiated the same with regards to hits.

The very notion is laughable.

Also, @#&$ you Ed.

The NFL changes rules to protect it's golden boy QB's while others do not get those calls. Nothing new. Glad to see Russell at least talk about it.

Pretty sure there are some on this board who believe Wilson is one of the "golden boys".

Valid? Don't honestly know.

I would say he's a damn lucky SOB sometimes. but it's also true that the Seahawks do a better job than most of coaching their receivers on what to do when their quarterback is scrambling.

I don't really have an opinion on that, but I've seen it said.

Russell has always had a knack for avoiding contact, even going back to college. It's not as much luck as just being one of those guys that has a sixth sense about pressure and a head to avoid taking big shots. I've seen the same from plenty of mobile QB's before.

I wouldn't include him in the golden boy crowd. That would be Brady, Rodgers, Manning, etc. Seems to be a pretty small group every year, TBH.

What would you consider the most important factor for gaining entry to that club?

Is it age, success or popularity?

I haven't given it enough thought, honestly. It seems to be such a small group getting that status. Not all older QB's get that benefit of the doubt. Some mix of all three maybe?

Honestly I would say it's being the most marketable QB possible. The NFL has an image it wants portrayed and if you fit that image, you will get the calls. If not, see one Cam Newton for details.

The one flaw in that argument is that Tom Brady doesn't really seem to be all that marketable. The few advertising campaigns he was part of were duds or had him in non-speaking roles.

On the flipside, nobody's been more marketable than Peyton. Hell, he's still getting jobs.

Maybe we can boil it down to a simpler question to lead us to an idea. Who are the QB's in that "golden boy" class?

Aaron Rodgers obviously is, they crafted a rule specifically to protect him. Tom Brady obviously is because they also crafted a rule specifically to protect him.

You've probably gotta put Drew Brees in there (although I'm sure Saints fans would say otherwise).
