Something we should all think about with regards to MLB post Luke.

Very true, but I still think Simmons should be the pick now given the circumstances. We didn't need him before because we had the GOAT, but now we do and it's not just a knee jerk reaction reach based off need. If there was ever a time for Luke to retire and we be in play to get a similar replacement, now would be the time. He's big with long arms, athletically he's every bit the freakshow Luke was and then some, with a nose for the ball. Losing Luke's football IQ would be a big blow, but Simmons has an extremely high football IQ himself, further along than the rest. He was tasked to play almost every position on defense, heavy snaps too and he knew exactly what his role was and what responsibilities he had. He's going to be special and being in play for him would be kind of like us falling as backwards into Luke all over again.

It sounds like you start by saying very true, and then write a post that is the complete opposite of the OP....

You can generally tell how teams value positions by the rank in franchise tags:

Franchise Tags

QB: $24.865 million
RB: $11.214 million
WR: $16.787 million
TE: $10.387 million
OL: $14.067 million
DE: $17.128 million
DT: $15.209 million
LB: $15.443 million
CB: $16.022 million
S: $11.15 million
K/P: $4.971 million

LBs are the four highest paid behind CBs and ahead of DTs. The 2019 draft had two ILBs in the top ten and both had outstanding  rookie seasons.  Picking BPA is usually the best approach especially in the first round. If you can’t trust your rating system in the top seven, fire the evaluators.

I didn't mean anything by it. I just meant the logic behind what you said is true, but that particular player is an exception.

    • I originally hated the Miller deal but with the cap projected to rise nearly $10M next season the Canes struck some pretty good deals between Miller and Ehlers. Most of the team is locked in for the next few years. Nikishin will need an extension probably in the $6M AAV range. And Blake will need one if we don’t move him. Personally I’d move Blake, picks, and any prospect not named Nikishin/Nadeau/Artamonov for McTavish as I don’t see any any of the big time players moving teams next year. Realistically the Hurricanes should just target Gustavsson next year to fix the goal tending issue. But I’m all for moving Blake, picks, and prospects for McTavish this year. Ehlers - Aho - Jarvis Svechnikov - McTavish - Stankoven Martinook - Staal - Carrier Hall - Kotkaniemi - Robinson Jost - Jankowski Slavin - Miller Nikishin - Chatfield Gostisbehere - Walker Reilly Andersen Kochetkov I’d do Blake, Felix-Unger-Sorum, and 27 2nd for McTavish.
    • Very true on the length but stuff like this is never where we shine. We aren’t a good team at drafting.
    • Homerism aside, the more I see from Dan, the more impressed I am.  His player evaluation instincts. Last year his 2 premier FA signings, Hunt and Lewis COMPLETELY changed the line and I have a feeling his success in choosing blue chip guys will continue.  Look at the panthers’s rep for FA signings in the past. By and large, it’s been guys 1 year past their prime who had an injury and suckered our GM in to a crippling contract. We never get nice things. When was the last time this team signed 2 young blue chip studs  in the same offseason to contracts worthy of their impact? Ever?  Im telling y’all, players respect and trust Morgan.
