I got that, too.  He wants to have the next negotiations earlier so he can cash in while in his prime.  Even one year could make a difference.  Can't blame him for that, but that assumes he demonstrates he is worth the money with the next contract.

It sounds like they are within striking distance of an agreement, at least from the articles I read

This would give some slight truth to the leak that he wants 45 in year 5 of his contract.  He isn't asking for 45/year.  But 35/year for years 1-4, 45 for year 5, is my take on it.  45/year will probably be the standard in 4-5 years.

So he either wants a 4 year deal so he can renegotiate a new QB deal as soon as possible, or he wants to be paid that 5th year like he did.

And yeah, I expect a deal to be hit before the tag deadline.

yes, it can be so hard to make ends meet on just a single $150M contract. I feel so badly for the position he’s in.

    • I understand why people say things like it could be worse in relation to Tepper but it just doesn't jive for me. Are the optics bad? Yes. Would I want her to be the owner of my team? No. But I mean she's only been owner for a year and the Colts overall are a better run organization. As far as I know they've also never had the distinction of having the worst win percentage in all of professional sports either. Tepper has owned this team for 8 years and about the only thing that has been consistent has been the ability to continue to find different ways to achieve new lows. Even now people are saying things are different yada yada but we said these same things at certain points under Rhule Fitterer and Reich. I'm going to wait to see how the rubber meets the road this upcoming season before I make any strong conclusions about anything in relation to the longevity under this franchise going forward.
    • This is a toughie because I wonder what a guy like Canales thinks about redemption stories for addiction issues. Also, I think this is a case of 1 player getting caught, and not being naive enough to think this isn't more common in college than we think. I'd toss a 3rd rounder out there. 2026 is essentially a redshirt season regardless, so he's not taking over for any NFL QB next year. Best case, he's ready to go in 2027 if we pass on Bryce's extension. Worst case, he's our future backup QB2. Kid has the tools to be an NFL QB. I do think we could somehow land a '26 3rd round pick back in a trade. Our past years' third rounders are: Brazzell Princely Wallace DJ Johnson Matt Corral All this to say, I could see a team like the Jets going w/ a 2nd. They have three FRPs next year.
