NFL News from Week 1

Tom Brady isn't the only place player Bucs Coach Bruce Arians spoke about after yesterday's game. Arians also said he was disappointed in the play of left tackle Donovan Smith, stating that Smith didn't give Brady enough protection (something to keep in mind this Sunday).

Word also out of that game that Saints star receiver Michael Thomas sustained an ankle injury. It's believed to be a minor, and Thomas says he can play through it.

Not such good news for Colts runningback Marlon Mack. Mack sustained an Achilles tendon injury yesterday and might be out for the year.

And in the weirdest story of the day, Lions linebacker Jamie Collins yesterday tried to demonstrate to an official what another player had done to him with his helmet. In doing so, Colins' helmet made contact with the ref's chest and he was promptly ejected :)

(the Lions wound up losing)

You do not touch a ref.  They are not your chums.

On one game, I was working on paperwork and I heard something about electronic whistles.  Not sure what that was about (Covid 19?).  Still, I wonder why they do not have chips in the nose of the football to measure for first downs and to check forward progress. If the ball is spotted, for example, a ref should be able to tell how far it is to the first down.  "Coach, you are 2 feet, 3.36 inches from the first down."  Future ball.

And why not have drones providing video images for the referees?  And why not allow the qb to have a microphone to call plays into helmets of the offense instead of huddling or using audibles the defense can hear?

I am an idea man.

a Poem

"Yanking 1's chain"

Cam did not like the fish grabbing his bling,

So he filleted them, with so much at stake,

they pulled his chain and he pulled his hamstring,

Located behind his thigh, for pete's sake.

Explication:  Note the play on words and the references to "meat" in this classic poem.  "fish," "stake" (or steak), and "thigh" (as in chicken thigh).   The ABAB rhyme scheme amidst flawless iambic pentameter shows how some stupid altercation over jewelry that has no purpose on the field can become art.

Thank you,

The Huddle Bard

Without seeing the Collins video that just bothers the hell out of me. Sounds like a ref on a power trip, like a cop that gets mad when you call him pig. Flexing because he can.

EDIT:  Okay I saw it. Yeah kinda stupid of Collins

I understand the spirit of the rule. Kinda dumb given context though. Like when Steve Smith got ejected. That was just the ref being an asshole.

I get it, but it's one of those rules that really does need to be called by the letter of the rule. Touch a ref and you're out. No gray area of whether that touch was enough to get the boot or not.
