Phil Snow's Defense

Don't get me wrong. I think Snow will improve over time and may be a great coordinator one day. It wasn't fair to ask him to try and whip this defense into a great unit with no off-season or preseason. So I don't think you can make any great judgments off of this year. I want to make that clear.

But my goodness I thought Washington was bad and really hoped Snow would be aggressive and that Teppers desire for a blitzburg type defense would help us play aggressively. In McDermotts first year we got burned a lot but at least the players were aggressive and we blitzed frequently although we didn't get there that much. But you could see the potential. When is a prevent defense effective except to prevent you from stopping anyone or winning. The lack of adjustments is dismaying on both sides of the ball.

I agree, it was a hard sale for Snow to come through but I don't believe we're that far off and I'm not in favor of getting rid of Snow as of right now. I do think we'd be a lot better with a few adjustments. Tighter zone coverages with player assignments, better tackling, better blitz alignments, etc.

Phil Snow fired yet?

Wow, really... First off, I never called for or insinuated that he should be fired. I did say that our defensive issues, prior to this game, was on coaching and not players. Although many Huddlers said our defense was bad because we have so many players that were @$÷_. No, I'm not repeating it. I didn't agree with it then and I don't now. Our issues against the Lions were corrected and Phil Snow deserves a pat on the back...

Plus no 3 man rush today and actually mixing up rush packages. That did wonders. Snow bought himself a little leeway but I'm still of the opinion we need to get a real NFL DC in here next year.

Yeah he brought a great game plan today. Our defensive players did less reacting to plays today.

When I say bring in a NFL DC too I don't mean get rid of Snow, obviously Rhule isn't going to get rid of Snow. Just move him to Special Assistant to the Head Coach and let someone else call the defense. Unless he calls games like today consistently.

I approve this message...

This is exactly what I have been preaching for weeks.  Everyone said it was personnel and there was nothing Snow could do. I said we weren't playing good matchup zone and weren't disguising our blitzes. Then I said we should put more guys on the line and drop or rush them without telegraphing what they are doing.  Magically we do the exact things I said we should and suddenly we pitch a shut out. I think Shaq lit into them and maybe bitched to Snow about the scheme. In any case it seems like 2 different defenses even accounting for this being Detroit. It proves what I said all along. It was scheme more than personnel.

Oh, I'd still say it was personnel today.

Specifically, the personnel that coach and play for Detroit...

    • I would tend to agree about not falling into the trap and paying a below average QB, but sometimes situations can “force” a team to pay that QB. For example, if we play ourselves into a 9-8 like record, then what options will we have in the draft? Or do we avoid the draft and trade for or sign someone in free agency?  I’m not convinced by the 2026 QB draft class. There’s some intriguing prospects but no one that really screams “draft me”. I’m not sure we’ve got anyone really that stands out as a trade candidate or free agent signing. So although we might not want to commit a big money contract to Young, him playing well and showing progress might force the team’s hand.
    • Realistically we would be looking at no more than a mid round pick for Dowdle or Chuba. Are we really that desperate for a mid round pick? Not really. I would much prefer us utilise the two RBs in a 1-2 punch similar to how we used D-Will and Stewart. After all, Bryce is not Drew Brees. He won’t throw for 300+ yards and carry the team consistently as a passer. So having a strong running game with a 1-2 punch will be beneficial to him, and it will also be beneficial to the RBs because we can spell them and not overwork them.
    • The Jets and Bill's are statistically worse
