I don’t *love* the first pick but this would be a disgustingly good draft.

I wanted to go Micah Parson, but with Lance on the board and all of the talks of "You gotta go get your guy if he's there," I went with positional value over player value.

I’m sure you’ve seen but my preference on a QB is Fields or bust. I’ll go into this draft the same as I did this previous draft. I thought maybe trading up for Burrow was a good idea and then I talked myself into: Tua has been amazing every year he’s played and when he isn’t hurt he’s great. He was producing better than Burrow up until he got hurt so I’d be ok taking him. Then I convinced myself if this new regime felt Herbert was the guy I’d support it.

I don’t expect us to rank hard enough to get into the top 3 and have a shot at Fields so I’ll go again with if we take a QB I trust this new regime to pick a good one. That’s why I’m not in love with the choice of QB selected but the truth is at that spot he might be the top projected QB left and I won’t complain. Pending on who else was available in that draft Parsons might have been the pick but I’m never upset when a team goes for their guy at QB. It looks like every team outside of GB who took a QB in the first this year has a bright future ahead.

It’ll be interesting to see the mock drafts after this week. If we lose and two games break our way we could move all the way up to 6 and then I feel like we are in potential move up territory via trades.

We have as good a chance of landing Trevor Lawerence as we do Sewell.  Not a chance he falls past 3

Fanspeak:

R1 P7 QB Zach Wilson - BYU

I had my choice between Wilson and Lance. Right now I'm just more comfortable with Wilson. I haven't done enough looking into Lance to have developed a strong opinion. So, I went Wilson. I reserve my right to flip flop that opinion when I look deeper into Lance during the predraft process.

R2 P7 OT Samuel Cosmi - Texas

Even if Moton returns we need another OT. He has played both LT and RT at Texas.

R3 P7 C Josh Myers - Ohio State

It was hard to pass over Chazz Surratt here, but this pick is all about our 1st rounder. We had a franchise QB once and we let him get the hell beaten out of him because we never prioritized the OL in front on him. I'm not going down that road again. He may start out at OG if Paradis is retained, but long-term starting center is the long-term goal with this pick.

R4 P7 LB Jack Sanborn - Wisconsin

Well, I would've really been kicking myself for going Surratt over Myers with Sanborn available here. I think Surratt has the higher ceiling, but Sanborn is more NFL ready and probably has the higher floor.

R5 P7 S James Wiggins - Cincinnati

I really like this player and I don't think these 5th round draft grades will hold up once we get deeper into the predraft process. For now, yeah I'll take him all day everyday in the 5th. I think he's a potential starting caliber NFL FS. If not, we need better depth there anyway.

R6 P7 WR Dazz Newsome - North Carolina

I expect us to let Samuel walk. Here's Samuel-lite in the 6th round. He's a slot in the NFL which hampers his value but that's what we need with Anderson and Moore on the outside. He's a punt returner too which adds to his value for us. He averages over 11ypr.

Would've loved to have had a CB in the mix it just didn't work out that way. But we're not fixing all of our problems this off-season.

    • And even worse you have injuries force you to play anther one dimensional train wreck combine that with Orlov being no were close to as advertised and boom you have 3 defensemen being dressed who couldn't defend my 96 year old grandmother. That said next year having Slavin,Miller,Nikishin,Chatfield gives you the best shutdown d man in the league two large athletic HIGH offensive potential D who can take away time and space....   The more I think about it the more I like this seasons approach, if you bring back burns or aquire anther large RHS with length you have 5 D all over 6'2 and 210 with three of them having great offense too, make no mistake they want size and skill on the blue line now and its almost 100% directed at getting past FL.
    • Honestly the 2024 draft class(minus brooks). All are in line to be starters, expect crumedy who's fighting for a 53.  Still that class was looking terrible, is now looking like 4 starters and maybe 1 depth. Anytime you draft 2 starters and a key depth piece its a good draft. 4 starters are rare and that's with brooks who could have made 5 starters if not for awful luck.  That draft also helped land starter Michael Jackson in a round about way, big bonus..
