The "Let's get a QB in the 1st round" group

Hear me out. First I want to say I'm not a Teddy B stan be any stretch of the imagination lol. However; I know the top 2 QB's will be off the board by the time we are picking. With that being said I just don't see it being a smart idea reaching for a QB that everyone is wanting to sit his rookie year. The best scenario IMO would be trade back to one of the QB needing teams that will be picking mid teens and accumulate draft capital for 2022 draft. Select your CB1 like a Caleb Farley or starting OT like Christian Darrisaw and fill the holes on roster. Then when 2022 Draft comes around with its loaded QB class we make the move to trade up for our guy why also having the luxury to dump Teddy B's contract at that point, freeing up a lot of money for us to be able to pay our corner stones (Brian Burns, DJ Moore, Taylor Moton, etc), because we have a QB on a rookie deal with a much more solidified roster built around him. I would be totally fine with us picking a QB this year (not named Mac Jones/Trask lol) but I can't help but be terrified with the young QB's development with the poo show we our going to have at OL next year. None of us want another individual to endure the treatment Cam got with having to run for his life, and put the team on his back week in and week out I feel like we can all agree on. Also, if you think Drew Lock and Hamler tore us up, just wait till A-Rod and Devante Adams take the field on prime time against us this week and watch how exposed our DB's will look lol. Many of you will be pounding the table for Surtain by the end of this week if I had to guess. If we have a great defense we don't need Teddy to be a super hero (Look at the colts young flourishing defense) and opens the playbook up much more. Just food for thought and wanna hear your guys and gals objective thoughts on the matter. Keep Pounding & Dilly Dilly.

I too am a best player available kind of guy.  Position need can influence evaluation for "best" so if we go QB with that in mind then fine.

Exactly where I am, I feel very good for where we are and not being in the boat of ABSOLUTLEY needing a QB. However if Fields drops to us with Zack Wilson's stock sky rocketing as of late you have to get him I feel like.

I don't like reaching for a quarterback either, but we'll need to see our draft position and who's available before we know whether a pick is a reach.

For sure, just wanted to bring the topic up to see what everyone thought on the matter. Man though, Zack Wilson and a healthy CMC in the backfield does sound oh so nice.

It doesn't matter whether the top 2 QBs are gone, if the top 4 QBs are gone, or if no QBs have gone off the board.  It's a simple as this: if there is a QB available at your pick that you think is going to be a franchise QB,  you take that QB.  If you don't, you go elsewhere, whether that be picking another position or trading out of the spot.

I will admit to pondering the question of if, for whatever pure fantasy of a reason you can come up with, Penei Sewell were to be available at our pick, would you take him over your favorite non Trevor Lawrence quarterback choice?

No. Sewell is a great LT prospect but he'll be Joe Thomas for us if we don't find a QB.

No doubt you take him. If the Bengals don't get him Joe Burrow will be in the club crying lol

Great point. Joe Thomas was amazing. The Browns team that drafted him was still poo. Poo with a great LT, but poo nonetheless.

It’s a QB driven league, and Teddy ain’t it. Next year we won’t be drafting this high again. The right QB is there and he checks all the evaluation boxes, you pull the trigger.

I get the point but to compare Teddy B to the QB's the brown had starting while Joe Thomas was there seems fairly harsh lol. Just to name a few of the top of my head : Deshone Kizer, Brady Quinn , Brandon Weeden, Colt Mccoy, Cody Kessler lol. Like mentioned above, definitely not a believer in Teddy as the future guy but we can't poo on his name that hard. Especially with a healthy CMC for the check down god lol.

    • Tanking in the NFL isn’t really a thing and anybody wanting to bring the rigged lottery to the NFL has an ulterior motive.
    • I understand where you're coming from, but we need another safety IMHO. Other positions, especially on defense, dont have ideal depth, but to me at least S is the one position we can't stand pat at even when thinking about the future
    • 100%. Nick Scott was awful last year. Like, even for a franchise that hasn't historically invested in that position, it stood out for how awful it was. If he sees meaningful snaps at S again we're cooked.  Maybe he has value for ST, but I certainly hope we can upgrade. Jordan Fuller, who was by all accounts an Evero guy, was almost as bad. Xavier Woods was bad, but not complete garbage. Still did not want him back. Those 3 guys seriously may have been the worst S group in the NFL. And they all were brought in, especially Fuller, as good fits for this system. Everyone knocks the defensive line, and they deserve a lot of blame, too, but so, so many times our safeties inability to tackle let 4-5 yard runs turn into 10+. And it happened over and over and over again if you watch the film. Honestly, Demani Richardson was the only S by the end of the year I remember making positive plays. I have no issue with Richardson being in the mix and/or competing to be a starter, but we still need another S desperately IMHO who has actually played meaningful snaps in the NFL. The only caveat/excuse for our secondary was the fact our pass rush was nonexistent for large stretches last year. Maybe that helps with coverage, but I dont see how that makes any of these guys better at tackling.  I know it somewhat feels like piling on at this point, but I feel 100% confident in saying this was the worst tackling team in franchise history. The 70ish yard pass play we gave up to Jamarr Chase where he ran through and past everyone in the secondary has to be up there in terms of most embarrassing plays I've ever seen. I can't imagine how embarrassed Kuechly must have been watching from the booth... I think bringing back Evero was a mistake, but for a team that has had nothing but change over the past 5 years, I'm willing to see this through. I definitely think we added significantly to the floor of this defense with the additions we made. I dont think Evero has any further excuses if he cant field a unit that can at least somewhat hold their own. Fixing the safety play is going to be a big part of that.
