And it’s the right move for you guys. Lots of close losses and chokes this year were more on coaching than personnel. I don’t see any reason the new HC/GM couldn’t turn it around relatively quickly and get a solid 3-5 more years from Ryan, potentially contending as soon as 2022. All depends on hiring the right HC and GM though, which is the much bigger question for you guys than the future at QB.

Yeah the talent is borderline playoff-level, assuming some of the choking rot can be cleared with a coaching change (big if) and assuming Ryan’s play isn’t the new norm.

I don't think so.

Anyone coming in is going to look at the place they are drafting, realize Matt Ryan is going to be 36 when next season starts, and draft one of the QB's coming out.

Sure, he might play another year or two, maybe even three.  But the Falcons, like the Panthers, are unlikely to draft this high again, in a QB class this deep.  To me, that's the biggest concern.  Anyone near the top of this draft is going to look at the QB's coming out and think "We won't see a class like this anytime soon".

Sure, but the single biggest benefit of drafting a new QB is paying him way below market for a few years. The way the Falcons, cap is situated, they won’t be able to reap that benefit, since they’ll be paying Ryan anyways for 2 more. Better to wait, see what Ryan has left in the tank; and try to hit on the rookie pay scale window for the next guy.

What I’ve seen from Ryan hasn’t even been all that bad... The play calling and lack of a run game has been atrocious but I think that can be relatively easily fixed with coaching, plus Julio missed a lot of the season. I’ve never been a big Ryan fan and despite the MVP would never have put him in the top tier of QBs at any time, but I do think he’s definitely good enough and a stable well above average presence that it would be ridiculous to move on from him this early. Especially given the contract situation. I mean, if Fields is there at 4 and the new staff is in love with the guy, then that’s not necessarily a bad move, but I would think plan A and plan B would be to stick with Ryan and try to do a quick retool to compete with him down the stretch of his career. We’ll see what happens

At least one team between the Eagles, Lions, Falcons will take a QB.

Yeah, all of those teams could, or none of them could. Who knows. Ryan and stafford certainly don’t scream “move on from me” and hurst is a young 2nd who came in and outperformed Wentz. They might also just give Wentz another shot next year if they can’t trade him
