Who do you like besides Cowher

I really expect the next coach we hire will be a coordinator from another team. I like Russ Grimm from Arizona. I normally prefer defensive guys as head coaches but that is all we have ever had and I think it might be time for a change. Grimm being an o-line coach would not be that different to a def. coach running the team. I also think Sean Mcdermott from philly, Zimmer from the bengals, Mularkey from the Falcons, and Williams from the Saints are interesting. Any thoughts?

Gary Patterson.

Guy is just a damn fine coach. Defensive minded but like a high powered offense to compliment his typically stingy defenses.

Also, we have a relatively young team and a college coach would fit well in team development.

Although he seems like a long shot and an unproven NFL coach...we do have a pretty direct connection to Mr Patterson

That is a very interesting connection. What college coach besides Jimmy Johnson has been a success in the NFL as a head coach? At the least Notre Dame should give him a call.

No, I meant Kelsey Grammer.

Okay, not really, but if we were to go with a current coordinator, I'd imagine he'll be sure to get a look.

:)

No doubt. I think he'll be a head coach somewhere next season. I mean, he's played a successful part in some big name defenses with the Eagles, Colts, and now the Vikings.

He even saw improvement out of the Bengals defense during the two years he was there.

I know right now people are clamoring for some offensive genius who will be able to optimize the talent we have, but our defense is far from stable right now. I would love to see us get back to being an elite defense. We've got enough talent on offense that I don't think we need some offensive mastermind.

Yep you need a defensive coach to keep a strong defense. You don't need a offensive minded coach, just not a (to an extreme) ultra conservative defensive minded coach. Why can't we have a little of both. Honestly I haven't heard a better and more importantly realistic option than Cowher as of yet.

    • Trade up for a project was dumb, he's gonna be 25 next month. By the time you're deciding on whether he's worth the 5th year option or a big contract you're already gonna be thinking about moving on soon either way.
    • I mean this is legit AF statement....you don't spend that draft capital on a project just like you don't trade up for an injured RB either, which was done in the same draft.  That draft IMO was a necessary evil for DM to learn from his mistakes (I think he did but some may not). Also I have to mention I'm a big Coker fan and think getting him as an UDFA was obv a steal.  Coker is the better WR2 at this point as Legette and its not even debatable unfortunately.  Give him year 3 but don't expect much from him.  Continue in the offseason with adding as much talent and competition on the roster as possible including WR.  Or just trade his ass for peanuts and continue to build roster by any means.......
    • Losing him was a huge loss. Look at how the Bears went from a 5 win team to now a 11 win team. The Lions offensive line is bad this year, secondary is bad and Campbell going for it on 4th down all the time has cost them games instead of taking the Field Goals. Goff is inconsistent as well.
