Lets see.

Tag him for 20 Million for the year.

Fail to get a trade for him.

Have him be lack luster.

How is that not the same situation?

You think he is suddenly going to be in demand ?

It's not the same situation because we can absorb any cap penalty and sign any player that we want (theoretically).

Yep, Pep won't sign a Franchise Tag contract in a timely fashion that will serve the Panther organization the same way he wouldn't sign it last year.

Pep's agent to Pep:

"Here it is: Either we play wherever we want next year or you half ass it in Carolina for $20 million dollars, just like last year.

Am I the greatest agent or what?"

The biggest difference is the panthers will have the intent on trading him something they did not have last year.

It does not matter what the Panthers want when Pep won't sign his Franchise Tag contract until late July like last year. We could not trade him last year, same thing will happen this year.

The point is if Pep signs his tender early, we can trade him wherever we want. We could ship Pep to the Raiders if we wanted. He doesn't want that so he ain't signing.

that is true only if you found a team willing to part with a high pick for a player under a 1 year contract.

The Pats have a 1st rounder this year and 3 2nd rounders.

In 2011 they have 2 1st round picks.

They'd be nuts to spend huge $ on Julius Peppers when they can draft whatever they want.

The Patriots may not win a Super Bowl this year, but they will soon be re-loaded with a ton of top talent.

The Patriots Front Office so outclasses most NFL teams it's hilarious.

All those picks make it more likely they trade not less

    • No one way to do it, it does appear that with the bigger draft picks of the last 5 years…..majority haven’t steered clear of young QBs on the roster being their hopeful guy. Especially past their rookie seasons but even some the biggest ones have had it early.   As far as Andy Dalton, the two young guys he has “mentored”…..have had very rough NFL starts.  Which really ask the why the heck is Dalton here.   He doesn’t really check any box.  No young potential.  Can’t step in and win.  And his mentor track record with Fields and now Bryce is bad
    • I had thought the Panthers might let him play out his contract this year and hope he stays healthy. If not draft a left tackle and move Ekwonu to right tackle.
    • Frankly, if most teams in the NFL lose their starting QB for a significant amount of time, they're screwed. The fantasy is that one has a future Tony Romo or a Nick Foles that can carry a stacked team. The reality is that you might get roughly 3~5 games out of your backup before it all falls apart. Remember all of Peyton Manning's backups? Utterly terrible. Speaking of backup QB's, Raiders may need one. https://www.nfl.com/news/raiders-qb-aidan-o-connell-suffered-fractured-wrist-in-preseason-finale-expected-to-be-out-6-8-weeks
