They were booed off the ice on Saturday after a 5-1 thrashing at the hands of……the Sabres. They had a players only meeting after 3 games of the season……can only mean one thing as we roll into town….

Pepper their ass. Svech will bring the lumber tonight. I could see a 7-1 type of game. Or not. Let’s crush them.

Last Time Out: The Canes got off to a good start Saturday night in Calgary, establishing an early 2-0 lead. Sebastian Aho picked up his seventh point in three games with a goal just 1:44 in and Calvin de Haan contributed his first of the season to follow, but then things turned sour for the club. Calgary got a power play goal before the end of the first and completely took over the game in the second. They'd tie the contest and after Carolina could not convert on four minutes of power play time on their own inside the final seven minutes, the game needed overtime. In the bonus frame Tyler Toffoli beat Antti Raanta to seal the deal for the Flames.

Winning The Special Teams Battle: Thursday night Rod Brind'Amour and players cited special teams as the difference in the team's 6-4 defeat to the Oilers, as they gave up two on the power play and another shorthanded. Saturday the Flames went 1/4 on the man advantage, but the issue was more about what was not done as opposed to what was. Carolina went 0/4 on their opportunities, 6:00 of which came inside the final 11:36 of the third period in a tied game. To add another level of frustration, they produced just three shots in their eight minutes of work. Vancouver enters tonight dead last in the penalty kill, perhaps providing an opportunity for the Canes' man advantage to appropriately get back on the board.

So, They Are Human: After exceptional starts to the season for both Andrei Svechnikov and Martin Necas, both were held pointless on Saturday in Calgary. Svechnikov totaled eight points through the first four games of the campaign, six of them coming as goals. The six trail only Steven Stamkos of Tampa Bay for the most league-wide. For Necas, he's now got seven points in five games, a tremendous start to his bounce back year.

We do need a full 3 periods of Canes hockey though. We haven’t put three together yet this year.

As someone mentioned in the other thread, 7 points from 10 on a West Coast road trip at start of the year will be good. It’s the level of performance that concerns but still early days.

That was me. Keep in mind the back half of last year the canes were a pretty average hockey team. In the playoffs it showed. This team already looks much better than last year. If Burns can improve and our power-play kicks up will be just fine. We’re in a very good spot

    • Give me Anthony Hill Jr or give me death
    • We need a Sam Off Ball Backer to pair with Lloyd. Lloyd is a strong Interior Will especially in Pass Coverage- but that is also Trevin Wallace’s archetype. Need a Rozeboom style run stopper. Rodriguez and Allen fit that
    • There aren’t that many ways to screw Day 2 up.  That’d be them making an obvious reach, or selecting at one of the few positions that we are pretty solid at. Because as excited as we are for the growth and improvement this team is showing, it’s still not an overly talented or deep roster. Honestly, there aren’t really many positions I’d feel bad about. Feelings about Bryce aside (because we are not going to select a QB), it’s really RB (bad positional value) and that’s it. I guess OT too since we grabbed Freeling in Round 1.    While not as high on my wish list as other spots, you can justify WR or TE.     Interior offensive lineman who would likely take over an interior spot either this year (at center) or guard (next for cap casualty of Hunt or Lewis)? Fine by me.   Dlineman? Yes, that’s a highly rotational position and we have zero quality depth.    ILB? Yep, could stand for an upgrade over Wallace.    EDGE? Absolutely wouldn’t hate another option to spell Phillips, Scourton, and Princely.    FS?  Would love to add better coverage skill set to the backend of the defense. Moehrig and Ransom are great in run support but not as good deep. Adding a more traditional FS would allow us to mix and match/run some 3 safety sub packages and or a big nickel type look with a SS down near the line for better run support in possible pass downs.    CB? Could stand to get better at nickel.
