Isn't that what some people have said certain horror movies use?

Not technically. ASMR has only been around since 2007, though some movies may have scenes that evoke a similar response.

ASMR is supposed to be calming, not particularly thrilling. I'm not an expert, but a with quick glance over Google in regards to horror movies I've learned that apparently our body releases adrenaline when we perceive threats, whether real or imagined; basically we get amped up and ready to "go". I'd think that we get a similar rush when riding thrilling rides like a roller coaster.

I know there was a story a while back about certain horror movies using some kind of low level sound to stimulate fear responses.

Don't remember that much about it but I remember seeing it.
