Kiper's grade of Panthers 2009 Draft

Carolina Panthers (Spring grade: C)

The worst thing about this draft wasn't the pick of Everette Brown by itself -- but that they gave up their 2010 Round 1 pick to get him. While production from a Round 7 pick (Captain Munnerlyn) is a redeemer, it wasn't a great draft. Sherrod Martin has worked out, but to lose a first-round pick from any component of this haul really hurts. Now, the team needs to draft a QB, and will have to wait until the top three to five are off the board in 2010.

Biggest surprise: Captain Munnerlyn, defensive back. He’s turned out to be one of the best choices of the seventh round. Munnerlyn has contributed in the secondary and as a return man.

Jury’s still out: Mike Goodson, running back. Remember all that preseason talk about the speedy runner from Texas A&M? Well, it hasn’t carried over into the regular season. The Panthers now are higher on undrafted rookie Tyrell Sutton.

Bust alert: Tony Fiammetta, fullback. If it seems like the Panthers have been drafting fullbacks ever since Brad Hoover arrived as an undrafted free agent early in the decade, it’s only because they have. But none of them have been able to get the steady Hoover off the field. Fiammetta got some playing time when Hoover was hurt, but didn’t show any signs he’s ready to take the job

In my opinion it's way to early to judge this draft. Need more than just one season to really understand what you got.

Mel Kiper is a tool. It's astonishing at how he has been able to keep his job. He is hardly ever right in his mock drafts.

But they're judging it right now, and I agree 100% with them. Sure, someone can come along in a year or two and do the same article, but it won't get much interest from fans. We care about the here and now.

Every year someone says we need to draft a QB, and we rarely do. If Moore continues to play well, we might not this year. Before anyone castigates me, I think we should bring in someone. But with Mcnown and Moore competing for the starting spot, we might not.

Mel Kiper is the only guy I know who gets his hair done at Lockheed Martin. His hair-doo is unflappable!! And that's about all he has going for him.
