Cherry Eye Treatment for Dogs

I was wondering if any of you guys have had to deal with "Cherry Eye" with your dogs? Our English Bulldog puppy just developed it and we are looking at all the options for her treatment. We have taken her to the vet and he has said that surgery would be around $1000. Any input or advice from someone who has already dealt with this would be greatly appreciated.

Your vet is trying to gouge you sounds like to me. I raise and train beagles and that breed also is prone to get Cherry Eye. My vet cut one off of my friends beagle for about $75.00 bucks.

I do know some of the old time beaglers do it themselves, ( bleeds profusely BTW)

I don't know if English bulldog's cherry eye could be that much different.

Sounds like a country club vet, I would definately shop around.

You probably don't live near Shelby NC but if you did there are several very good vets there that I use.

Here's a site with some info

Don't have the issue with mine, but it is very common.

Find a vet that loves the breed, and one that isn't trying to bend you over, and the will do it for a couple hundred, at most.

Call every vet, especially the ones that are out in the country, not in town. Their overhead is soooo much lower.

I have and raise English Bulldogs and they are very prone to getting cherry eye. I've had to have "cherry eye" surgery 3 times on a couple of my bullies. Depending on the size of the dog (anesthesia) you shouldnt pay more than $100. I recommend Dr.Pete at Clemmons veterinary clinic...336-766-8511. He is a english bulldog specialist and the best vet I've ever known. He is a straight shooter and doesnt charge you an arm and a leg, besides that he is very smart. I travel about an hour just for him to see my bulldogs. Don't take your English bulldog to just any vet, they have breathing issues anyway and anesthia is tricky with these guys.

Oh, and run from the vet that said it'd cost $1000. That guy/gal is in it for the wrong reasons and is trying to break one off in you!

    • I mean in this economy, companies have to be smarter with their spending. Sending reporters to Charlotte to cover a moribund, Pop Warner-level franchise is the ultimate waste of money that should get execs fired. If the media were being kept out, they'd report that--it's the most self-important profession in the world. Even for the locals who know "Panthers suck yet again" stories get them no clicks. Bottom line, no conspiracy here. They're just not worth covering.
    • why cant they just let teams have their kicker kick it and then run off the field? Thats the only thing he can do and he also cant recover an onside. The kicking team will have 12 men to start, including the kicker, and then he runs off.  the new rule seems complicated. Not sure if Im going to like it or not. If they wanted more returns, they shouldve just gone back to the old way.
