What if Fox doesn't WANT to come back?

This was in an article that Vic Carucci wrote reguarding his ProBowl picks. Thought is might intrest some of you.

The Carolina Panthers' coaching situation is something to watch. It isn't because the Panthers want to dump John Fox, as many in the media have speculated. As I'm hearing it from various NFL sources, it could very well be a case of Fox not wanting to remain with an organization that might not necessarily provide him with the resources to turn things around.

I don't agree with it but it's something that could be a possibility.

I hope we aren't about to do what Tampa did last year and play season well under cap?

Or Maybe Fox has been told Delhomme is done and Fox thinks he needs Delhomme to turn things around. Hey, its plausible.

Fox has a playoff caliber team (with good health) except the QB position which he could have easily at least attempted to fix by starting Moore. Yes we need another WR but talking about resources look at the other teams in the NFL I say the panthers are in a very good position team wise to go to the playoffs.

It wouldn't make sense for Fox to leave the Panthers, unless he were offered a lucrative job in college or elsewhere. He has (as others have said) an obvious playoff-caliber team. Other teams that need a coach are in rough, rough spots (Cleveland, Oakland, etc).

I give it a small chance that Fox takes that big, big risk and jumps ship. I just don't believe it.

Yeah, I can't see it either. He knows this team is on the verge. A team he helped build. So why would he leave now? He knows if he wins it all, he get the BIG contract, maybe just depends on the lockout. A lockout that I don't think will happen, too much money for everybody to lose.

A thing to consider though is that Fox isn't necessarily known as a risk taker. So, would it be a bigger risk to come back and hope we have a playoff season next year (or) find a new organization with a long term, lucrative, & secure deal (i.e. Bears, Bills, Oakland)? I think its a 50/50 scenario.

It's usually not ideal for a coach to want to coach out a lame duck year; not only due to the uncertainly of whehter or not he'll be there the year after...but his drafting methods and free agency strategy will depend a lot upon whether he feels next year is his last or not. Not to mention the uncertainty of where his family will be after next year with kids in school and other things....I expect Fox's people to try and negotiate a way to avoid a lame duck year to make it work for both the Panthers organization and Fox himself...Hopefully it'll end up with Fox gone without owing him the full $6 mill

I'd like to know what resource they are referring to that we need 'to turn things around.' Running backs? Got them. TEs, yes. WRs, Smitty plus some serviceable compliments. Oline, check. D-backs, solid. LBs, dominant. D-Line, above average.

What we need are good coaches. Special Teams is an absolute mess and our 'best' QB is a joke. If only we could be so lucky that he decides to step down...yeah right.

For those who think Jake won't come in as #1...why did Godfrey step right back in as the starter. He was grossly outplayed by Martin when he was out, but right back on the field where they 'drafted' him as soon as he was able. Must be nice to be so smart that you can ignore what's staring you in the face and somehow determine that someone who is vastly underperforming is the best at their position.

      They can get film of all the games? Every team? Wow! Who knew… Our games with them are big examples of why they are in  the CB market so hard.   It is the study they do getting ready for the games.  Preparing to play against is a little different than just analyzing film in scout mode. Deeper dive. Then you are analyzing post game too.  This goes to why players often change teams but stay in the division. The opponents know each other on a higher level.  Plus if you lost to us, you used to get fired. Now you have to trade your first round pick. Moving up on the world.

      I honestly can’t believe this team’s turnaround this season. It’s surreal. Figured healthy we’d be fringe playoffs and with another lottery pick could finally turn the corner, but we don’t even need that. This group is ready. We haven’t played remotely well the last 5 games and yet still blew out 5 bad teams by 16+ each game like it was casual practice. We had a few solid teams with Kemba and Big Al but this is easily our best group since the original Hornets moved to NO. Man, what a shift in culture this new ownership group and front office has brought. So damn happy to see it after years of suffering and consistently meaningless games in this stretch of previous seasons.   Only 2.5 games out of the 6 seed, although Miami, Atlanta and Orlando have been playing well too. Gonna be a fun final stretch, hopefully we can get a top 8 seed at the very least. Celtics tomorrow will be a good test. Would be huge to keep the road winning streak up against a very hot top team on the 2nd half of a back to back. We’ve played Boston pretty well the last few years with much of this same group despite sucking so I do feel pretty good about it. Kon is due for a huge game coming off a few cold shooting games (although despite the poor shooting he’s been contributing well with defense, assists and rebounds).

      It amazes me how underrated Horn has become after he finally was able to stay on the field. Sure last year wasn’t perfect but he was still a huge reason for our rebound defensively and I’d say he’s easily a top 10 corner. You don’t want to see Mike Jackson as our top corner. Any player is available for the right price but I’d be extremely hesitant to move Horn even for a big haul from LA.
