A very average team, unable to make the big play, win the big game, etc.

The failure starts at the top, with an inability to recognize talent, and an inability to develop that talent once it got here.

They took a once in a lifetime KR talent and made him a mediocre WR.

Invested huge sums of money in an aging defense.

Started guys that were clearly outperformed by other players, and only grudging or after injury put them in the right position.

Lovie Smith has "his guys".....and no dissenting voice can be heard. He is too far away now in SD.

They got lucky with Forte, and had to ride him like a rented mule after not recognizing the glaring need at WR.

Bottom line.....they outperformed my expectations, as I had them at 4-5 wins this season.

But when the opportunity of a down division presents itself....you have to take advantage, and the Bears did not do this.

I believe the Texans are a better football team than the Bears, and they proved it.

And I think the Texans are getting better, while the Bears are getting worse, despite the improvement in record over last year.

Ouch.

I know the Bears have not traditionally been a great passing team. It's always been the 'run game/defense' profile, but for that to work these days you do need to have some kind of passing threat.

Has Smith bought so much into the 'Bears mystique' that he thinks he can do without those things or is it just a case of missing on personnel decisions (and perhaps being too stubborn to admit it)?

They missed on personnel decisions, and aside from Forte can't hang the proverbial hat on any offensive high round draft picks.

The aging OL performed beyond my wildest expectations, but Orton struggled after his injury, and you'd be hard pressed to find a WR with #1 go-to pedigree.

Hester is VERY rough right now.

The defense generated little to no pressure on the QB from the front 4, which is an absolute must when you play cover 2 30% of the time.

The DB's were below average, and when Brown went down last week, you got to see what happens when less intelligent football players are required to recognize where to be in the scheme.

Again, a failure from top to bottom, and sadly I see the arrow on the Bears pointing downward, while the arrow for the Vikings and Packers appears to be pointing up.

The Blackhawks look pretty good all of a sudden!

Forte was a great find, but what in the world have they done in the draft as of late..?

Also, I think that everyone in the NFL knows including the Bears players, that they are a very cheap org. Not the best title when you are a FA looking for a decent payday.

The bears fill the stands because they are the bears, and ownership knows this, and does not have to spend the money for a fantastic team.

1st part- true, drafting offense has been very bad

2nd part- false, cheap....no. Spent unwisely....yes. Check yo facts befo yo misspeak.

    • Sure, he's said that, but what it really means is that he's just going to insist on being a two way player and the Jags want him as such. But he won't be a starter who plays every snap on both sides in Week 1, if at all during his rookie year.  This is the NFL, no rookie, no matter how good they might be, is going to be able to go through their first mini and training camps while splitting time on both sides of the ball and be ready to be a week 1 starter and go full time both sides. And if a team does that, then they're dumb. I think their plan is to start him mainly on offense to give Lawrence another weapon, and I'm guessing it means he'll be a rotational CB early in the season, maybe he comes in when they go to nickel, even if he then plays the outside and someone else shifts inside.
    • Keep the peddle to the mettle the devils are gassed
    • YAC isn't the only way to be a threat. Thielen's ADOT was 11 yards last year. He's stressing a defense beyond its first level. Renfrow's 2023 ADOT was 5.6 yards. He's settling into a soft spot under a zone and the defense bets that they can rally and tackle before he gets to the marker. That kind of popgun slot receiver play is fine, but we should hope to be able to find that ability in someone who can also bring another skill, whether that's a vertical threat, or some jet sweep/screen game YAC  ability, or even just being very large and blocking well. Every time we trot Renfrow out there, we limit what the defense has to worry about.
