How Good is Hurney?????

Who do you think was most responsible for Jake's contract??

no one knows..

I think JR actually...

He is the one who approves such a big deal, I am almost confident because Jake is his posterchild that it probably was him..

I still think Jake has a great chance at being our #1 going into week 1...

We will see.

This is the FIRST time JAKE has REAL competition going into training camp..

It will be interesting none the less...

Well, Hurney is the one that comes up with the numbers, but it wasn't his sole decision. You better believe Fox was assuring him that Jake "still has it", "just one game", "gives us the best chance to win", and all that other bullshit we've heard from him earlier this season.

Edit: E Cat beat me to it

I think it started with Fox convincing Hurney and Jerry that Delhomme was still his man and that the Arizona game was an aberration. Jerry obviously was convinced but it started with Fox for sure.

I think you are partly right...started with Fox. At that time JR prolly not strong enough to deal with it. Maybe part of why Jon got fired. Good bet it is a big part of why Foxy has been told it is fine if he leaves.

Agreed, except for last season Hurney has done a good job. He couldnt do much last season due to Peppers deal. I think he should stay around.

Our drafts over the last 5 years have definetely been top 10 compared to other teams, possibly top 5. That's the biggest thing I look for as far as a GM.

Don Gregory took over the college scoting in 2006.

Hurney is as good as the support people he has feeding him info.

Here's my view:

Hurney has done well in the draft at most positions. He sucks when picking WRs.

But overall, I'm pleased with what he has done.

As for tagging Peppers, at the time, I thought it was the right thing to do. He did have a good season this year, but was it worth strapping us and preventing us from having quality backups at other positions? Not sure about that.

As for the Delhomme contract extension, I'm almost positive this was done NOT REALLY TO EXTEND JAKE'S CONTRACT, BUT TO GIVE US SOME CAP SPACE TO SIGN OTHER PLAYERS due to so much cap space being used on Peppers.

I truely believe that's the reason behind Jake's extension. I can't believe Hurney really thought of keeping Jake through the duration of that contract. Which I believed at the time, and still do that it was the smartest move to make. I think it's a contract the Panthers can easily walk away from if they want to, salary cap or not.

Didn't we bring in a big free agent at the time in Adam Meadows in 2004? He was a solid starter in INDY for years and would have upgraded our offensive line had he not had a relapse of his shoulder problems. He ended up retiring early on and paid the Panthers his bonus back rather than string them along and being more harm to the team than good. I think there was another one too that year not as high profile. Remember Peppers tied up the cap this year pretty big. The team could have let him go and sign some free agents though.

Truth be told the team (won't blame it on Hurney specifically) may be lacking signing some of the cheap free agents we've done well with in years past like Na'il Diggs, Jason Baker, Marlon McCree, and Chris Draft. Solid starters who are cheap against the cap.

I know one thing. Somebody deserves some credit for all of these low round and undrafted players that have been showing up and playing good football lately. Guys like Bernadeau, Schwartz, Tyrell Sutton, Matt Moore and Captain Munnerlynn have made some solid contributions to this team. I think Charly Martin could end up being one of those guys too...he just got here a little too late to do much.

As good as it is to hit on those 1st rounders, it's just as important to do well in the late rounds and to find those relatively cheap FA role players that can help you out, and this whole staff has done a great job of doing that.

i dont think so-- I think if Fox gets canned in 2011 so does Hurney...

Its kind of a marriage....

I dont see that. Just because Fox was Hurney's first coach dose not mean there a package deal. Hurney for the most part has done his job.

We hardly ever have draft picks to holdout.

We are known around the league as easy to deal with and that attracts Free agents.

We sign our core players to long term deal most of the time. The Peppers situation IMO is more about Peppers not having an agent at all really.

We draft smartly and until now dont try to reach for picks.

    • These are the three deep throw attempts that Will Levis made in week 12. His first one is a beauty; Levis and Westbrook-Ikhine gets the safety to bite on a deep dig only to go over the top for the score. His second throw is another beauty: a crosser to Calvin Ridley reminiscent of Bryce to XL (though Ridley has noticeably more separation on his route). His third and final deep shot was an incompletion from his own endzone on 3rd & 14 with pressure coming down on him (to me, this seems like a solid throw).   Film Room Playlist NFL Pro-02.mp4 Film Room Playlist NFL Pro-01.mp4 Film Room Playlist NFL Pro.mp4 Film Room Playlist NFL Pro-01.mp4 Levis took half of the deep shots that Young did. The differences are: Ridley had much better separation than XL, which is why his deep crosser turned into a 63yd play since he was able to scamper for another 15+ after the catch. Westbrook-Ikhine holds on to his TD pass. Bryce had to throw one away to preserve time for a field goal. Bryce had two more throws that were incomplete due to the WR Are we really holding the three WR errors and clock management decision against Bryce in order to say that Will was better throwing deep in week 12? That's not passing the eye test nor is it confirmed by the data.
    • If you go on the PUP list before the season starts, you are gone for the year. If you start the year on the PUP list then you can get off of it. Kind of semantics, but we are putting him on the PUP list now which is before week 1, that’s why people who come off of it aren’t really on the PUP list until week 1, hence you usually hear right before the season that they are “starting the year” on the PUP list. I think PUP list and IR may basically be the serve the same purpose now because you also sometimes hear that if a player is added to the IR before week 1 that they aren’t eligible to come off the IR list for the entire year. Now, everyone added to IR (post week 1) can come off after 4 (or more) games so the PUP list is meaningless since it’s 6 games and starts at week 1. Anyone added to PUP or IR in the preseason is gone for the year.
    • I saw Brooks maybe a few weeks ago, he was walking pretty normally. of course he wasnt running, jumping and cutting.
