Peter King - deal Williams or Stewart for 1st round pick

As far as age, like a wise man once said "it's not the age, it's the milage."

I think Williams can be well productive past 30.

Good point and I believe so as well. His first two years he ran behind Ol' Fumblin' Foster and only got about 35% of the carries so I think he's got a lot of gas to burn. Also, I don't want people to think ima Stewie hater. To be honest, I love 'em both and would personally prefer Double Trouble to be together forever.

Wow!! Someone with some sense on this board. I swear all these "Panther Fans" just want us to have a 1st round pick on draft day so they won't be bored. Also, I still cannot believe that most of you would want to trade DWill if we had to trade one. DWill is a top 5 back Stewie isn't, so what I'm tryin to say is DWill is the better RB.

true...but was Williams a top 5 back in this 2nd season?? No. The key is to time things right in the NFL. Stewart likely will get even better and better as time goes on.

I think Williams great success has blinded some to just how promising Stewart looks......he went for 1200 yards, 10 TDs on a bad wheel......Stewart is off to a great start and I think Williams has blocked some from looking at how Stewart may progress in the next few years. In a backup role.....his numbers are very impressive for a 2nd year player. Plus, Stewart proved in college and in the NFL.....he has the ability to play through injuries at a high level that would knock most RBs out. I can't wait to see him healthy.....that could be scary.

Seems to me Williams would prefer the present system which allows him to get 1000 yards without burning him out. As for money the time to extend him is now for another 3 years. That means his contract will run through 2014. By that time he will be 31 and we will have gotten his best years. Because he is in a system with 2 guys he won't have to shoulder the whole load and should last longer than a guy like Turner who gets too many carries. To extend him we will have to give him a signing bonus of 9-10 million and a salary around 4 million similar to the contract of Maurice Jones Drew, or Brandon Jacobs. You could give him a roster bonus in 2012 or 2013 if he is still on the team as well. Williams this year only made 1.7 million which was below Stewart's 2.7 million. You don't have to break the bank in order to do right by him and the team. If you front load the signing bonus this year his cap hit could be as little as 4 million a year.

DWill never had a chance. Foxy was being entirely tooo loyal to Fumblin' Foster. Like I previously stated, It's a lot harder to run the ball when the opposing Defense knows thats all ur gonna do. Stewie started putting up big numbers cuz Moore established a passing game. DWill was putting up numbers when sorry Delhomme couldn't even complete a pass.

Ok, I give you that Stewie put up big numbers in his second season but he had almost a 100 more carries then DWill did his second season. Now, DWill finally gets his chance to be the man in Carolina and 40% of his carries are taken away by Stewie and he still puts up 1500+yard and 18TDs. Not tryin to make competition among teammates but sry DWill>Stewie!!

I would be tempted since we're a run-first offense and Williams is a special talent.

On top of that, there are lots of ways to structure a contract, the Panthers have a good revenue stream and we'll probably never see a salary cap again.

There will be a total salary cap and a rookie salary cap in 2011. Count on it.

So are you ready to shell out a contract to Williams when he is 29 for 5 more years and 50 million? I'm not...

Thats John Foxish and Marty Huneyesque

i DOUBT Williams would request that type money.

He is close to home, he loves the team, and he seems like a loyal guy...

This is the same kid who gave up going to a big college just to stay close to his mom...

That could have cost him..

I think he believes in himself more than he does money.

I see a 5 year 35 million contract.

And thats one i would pay in a heartbeat..

OK, I can understand the trepidation about trading one of them for a 1st, so here's a deal I thought of.

To Carolina: WR Malcom Floyd and a 2010 3rd round pick.

To San Diego: Williams or Stewart (take your pick)

With 2010 looking to be uncapped, Floyd will like be an RFA with one of the 2 high tenders, effectively taking you guys out of the running for singing him without dealing with us. IMO, Floyd has #1 upside, which he can't realize with VJ and Gates in SD. While he won't get that #1 chance in Carolina right off the bat, he could become a 1a in the next couple seasons and a 1 in 12 or 13. For now he'd be the field stretcher that would really help Moore's development as a starter and open up the offense.

It could be a risk for both teams as while you guys would be putting more trust in Sutton/Goodson in the backfield, we'd be doing the same with Naanee and Buster as our 2 (but I'd hope we'd get Benn/LaFell in the 1st or D. Thomas in the 2nd)

    • with arm strength people often get stuck on the distance  arm strength in the NFL is moreso measured in speed / velocity .which of course is how long does it take for  the ball to travel from the time of release until it reaches its target ? & u beat world class speed with more speed on the ball...just saying
    • No GM hits 100%. I'm well aware. But what a GM has to do is look at the roster, what's available, and future contracts and go from there. XL was a one season wonder in college. He has speed. Who cares. He body catches and his hands are bricks. Speed doesn't matter when you don't actually have the ball. There were other receivers available with better resumes. XL was a project. Fitts loved projects. You don't have the luxury of projects when you just traded away DJ for a QB. 1st round WRs need to contribute now.  Brooks was a luxury RB pick we didn't have the luxury to make. Who cares if Dallas was going to pick him. We had holes all over our defense. Chuba was coming off a fresh contract. We just inked 150m interior line and then centered it by moving a guard to center that had suffered 2 season ending injuries. The most critical area on our line was being held together by a bandaid and a prayer. No surprise when it didn't work.   Wallace is getting better but Wilson was sitting there waiting to be taken. DPOY for college football right there for the taking. That was a gimme pick. If you're going to take a risk on an injured player, the 3rd round for Wilson made a whole lot more sense at a position we were rest stop TP thin at.  4th round and on aren't going to be heavy contributors unless you're lucky.  He did well on the trade for Jackson. Coker, I believe he offered the largest guarantee. He actually got more than some late round picks make.  Those 1st 3 picks, IMO, were straight up whiffs.  Looking back at Fitterer's picks, I think he tried to plug holes because we had a ton of them. Problem was, he wasn't very good at it and he loved RAS scores and developmental players with a coach that couldn't develop a Polaroid. He tried to do too much. He was impatient. His other problem was he panicked during the draft and couldn't read or understand the flow of how drafts tend to go. DJ Johnson was the prime example. We needed an edge rusher and he jumped in at the end of the run instead of starting it.  Morgan's first year looked exactly like Fitts to me. Lots of projects.  2nd year looks better.  We'll see how 3rd year goes. FA also plays into all of this as well but that's a whole different topic of how it played out and planning with regard to drafting.
    • I judge how good our players are by the way a defense covers them. XL draws no special coverage. Coker on the other hand always has a man over the top. It still doesn’t matter. You be the judge.
