This is a smart move for them at low cost. The Bears have the most cap room in the NFL next year. Money isn't an issue.

Sweat in 2023:

8 games played , 32 tackles, 11 solo, 6.5 sacks, 2 forced fumbles, 1 pass defense and 7.5 stuffs.

Burns in 2023:

7 games played, 21 total tackles, 14 solo, 5 sacks, 1 forced fumble, no passes defended and 4 stuffs.

They are getting a Burns level player this season and he will only cost a second plus he won't get Burns level money in the extension.

I'm betting Jaylon Johnson wants to reset the CB market. Currently the only ones making $20m+/per are Jaire Alexander and Denzel Ward. He definitely wants to beat Jaire Alexander's 4-year/$84m salary average.

Crazy, he is good but not reset the market good.

You have to nail the pick. Also, what second round defensive lineman this season is putting up good sack totals and run stopping numbers? AND you have to hope he signs in free agency. They could be just as likely to not sign him in free agency and miss on the pick. Its the Bears.

Huh?

I want to trace Burns for a player that directly helps Bryce

I’ve been in the trade Burns camp since day 1 but not for a Damn corner. That’s Scott Fitterer level stupid

And who are you proposing we trade him for? Its easy to call everything stupid and dumb and oh em gee the worst thing ever but its a lot more difficult to use thought and propose a trade that makes some sense. Show your work.

If we’re trading Burns to Chicago I’d take DJ Moore back along with our 2nd rounder next year before Johnson

Burns or Brown should’ve been sent over in the first place considering we were trading up to take a QB

I’m all for trying to surround Bryce with competent pieces at this point. There’s enough film out there now to conclude what he’s currently working with is literal garbage. This organization did a dog sh!t job building around Cam and they’re well on their way to doing it again with Bryce

Chicago isn't going to swap out DJ Moore back to the Panthers. He will help their next QB out next year. Try another trade. Only we were dumb enough to trade DJ and then go draft a QB,

I agree and obviously they’re not trading DJ but I’m not trading any valuable asset that doesn’t directly help Bryce.

A few of us have gone through the list of realistic trade options for WR and it’s slim but unless someone offers me a couple of 1’s I’d rather hang onto Burns instead of trading for a corner. I really don’t feel comfortable stock piling draft picks as long as Fitterer and co. are here either. So I believe it’s truly crucial that any asset we have goes to directly helping Bryce.

What exactly does trading Burns for Johnson accomplish from a defensive standpoint?

The drop off from Burns to the next guy is a lot worse than the upgrade Johnson would be at corner for us

Johnson is a significant upgrade over Hill and Henderson. Evero in his year running the Denver defense was low on sacks, his leader had 6.5 on the season, but an elite corner in Surtain and their offense sucked but he still held teams back from scoring a ton despite that. Doesn't seem like his defense needs a pass rusher that is a monster. They dialed up a lot of pressure from the linebackers. Getting an elite corner and multiple picks that can be used to load up and go after a top WR or lineman for Bryce doesn't at all seem like something that is the worst trade ever, dumbest thing of all time, horrible move etc.

But the good news is, we don't have to do that as Chicago already got a better defensive end for just a second rounder.

Jaylon Johnson and the Bears could not come to an agreement on a contract extension and his agent was told they can seek a trade. He is a true #1 corner and has had to cover #1 with an inferior pass rush the past few seasons. We obviously have corner issues here in Carolina. Right now Troy Hill and CJ Henderson are our starting Corners and Jaycee Horn is never available.

We lose both Troy Hill and Henderson at the end of the year to free agency as well.

I would make the pitch:

**Panthers get**

CB Jaylon Johnson

Chicago Bears 2nd round pick ( Currently 37 )

Chicago Beards 3rd round pick ( Currently 68 )

This would give Carolina picks 34, 37, 66 and 68.

**Bears get**

DE Brian Burns

We get a long term secondary player and some decent draft capital back after the trade up to get Young, and extend him for significantly cheaper than what Burns is going to get. Chicago gets the pass rushing DE they have been after and can sign him easily as they have the most cap space going into next season and the second most the year after that. I also think it makes sense for Chicago to trade Justin Fields right now ( I am not sure I believe his dislocated thumb can't grip a football this week ) and they already announced TBag is the starter this week. I think that is to give Tyson all the reps with the ones while they take offers for Justin so they can get some of this draft capital back.

Johnson is an 84.4 grade on PFF is thats your kind of thing. And he is doing this with no pass rush. Chicago is dead last with 10 sacks as a team. 5 lower than the next lowest team. Chicagos leading sack guy has 2 on the season.

Max fitt move...

    • unless he totally lights it up in the offseason, he'll end up being 3rd. Chuba has already shown his value. Brooks is about to.
    • And squirrely as they come. The more I read up on Smith-Wade, the more I think this might be the best pick we made. Really hoping to see him out there making some QBs look really bad.
