Question about Carolinians...

If you are doing research for a dilaect coach for a film let them know Hollywood has NEVER gotten the Carolinaian speech right.

Charleston is vastly different than Asheville. Go up past Boone and they sound totally different than folks in Alamance or Travelers Rest.

If you grew up in and around Charleston and talked to someone out side of the Carolina's they wouldnn't know you were from SC.

Also, any politcians that are over 50 have that Southern aristocratic twang. Anybody who has grown up here knows exactly what I'm talking about.

There's also the famous UNC accent, displayed by the likes of Mike Easely.

Charlotte has difference accents among natives within the city limits, actually. An Eastlander sounds much different than someone from Myers Park, for instance.

My dad and brother sound midwestern, my mom sounds rural North Carolinian (Union, Cabarrus area), I sound like I'm from Charlotte.

Like pstall said, the accent is varied with some people having little to no accent at all. If you don't grow up with it, it's hard to tell them apart.

Heck, we've even got the Gullahs on the coast that sound closer to Jamaican than southern.

The accent that drives me up the wall is the one you often find in Western NC/East Tenn. Sounds like a cat in a dryer played at half speed.

What's hilarious is when I get on the phone and people ask where I am. When I tell them I'm in Texas, they invaribly say (if not from the South), "Yeah, I hear the accent." (I was born and raised in SC)

A Texan accent (Think Hank Hill) is as different from a Carolinian accent as a Boston accent is from a New Yorker's, yet non southerners can almost never distinguish it.
