Next year's surprise team

I wouldn't call it a huge surprise, but I can see the 49ers going 10-6 or 11-5, winning their division. Their biggest "if" is at QB, but Smith & Hill aren't necessarily terrible. ;)

Willis, Gore, Crabtree & Morgan...they have a lot of upside and young players.

I signed up for the Rams on the mock offseason thing and did alot of scouting on what their needs were and good lord it wasn't pretty. Their current roster is ridiculously horrible, they literally have a need at almost every position. They have castoff players that couldn't make a roster on any other team starting or playing significant minutes.

When the thread was posted showing the SB odds for next season St Louis was dead last at 150-1 and I couldn't help but think that they're probably not even that likely to win it.

the niners will probably win the west just because their division is collapsing around them.

the seahawks need to rebuild, the rams are destitute, and the cardinals are losing half their defense and warner is retiring.

they're the closest thing to a real team right now.

49ers could go 7-9 and still win their division.

Anyway, call me a homer but if the Panthers sign Peppers longterm and bring in a couple legit threats at WR then I like them to grab a WC spot and make some noise in the postseason. If Peppers leaves and we start the season with the same depth chart at WR then not so much.

AFC surprise - Chiefs. I would go with Houston here, but that isn't much of a surprise. They were 9-7 this year...I expect the same or slightly better next year. I like what the Chiefs did with their coaching staff. They need to add a couple veteran FA's on the offensive line, couple more playmakers on offense, and they are set. True, the defense isn't playoff caliber, but with Romeo Crennel coaching the D, I think they can improve a lot. Chiefs 10-6 and in the playoffs. Chargers will still win the division though.

On a side note, I expect the Broncos to be horrible. They pulled so many games out of their ass this year. They are going to fall apart in a hurry and wish they never fired Shannahan. Another reason the Chiefs will be decent.

NFC surprise - San Francisco 49ers. I know, I know, they get picked in this slot every year, but I finally think they are back. Their D is one of the best in the league, they have a solid coach, and a top tier running back (when healthy). Alex Smith played great when called upon and started to show why he was drafted so high. They just need to learn how to pull out the close games. With Arizona clearly falling off next year, it should be a cakewalk to the playoffs for the 49ers. 11-5.

NFC flop - New Orleans. Can you say Super Bowl Hangover? I can. 8-8 and miss the playoffs.

NFC South is unpredictable. the analysts will say its a 2 horse race. I think its a 3 horse race (maybe 4 if Tampa gets it together)

Tampa is definitely scary...Freeman will be a star QB really soon. But I still think they are at least a season away. Same with Detroit. But both teams are on the rise.

    • Bryce has been playing the best ball of his career the last three games IMO. He wasn't the reason we dropped the game in NOLA. Seattle's defense will be his toughest challenge yet this season
    • I'll be at the game Sunday and up until last year I had a perfect attendance record. Now however I have seen us lose to the Chiefs (last year) and the Bills (this year). So we can no longer rely solely on my ability to pound overpriced beers to propel us to a win.
    • I haven't been able to watch Seattle on a dedicated basis but the Seahawks are a much better team by the all accounts: eye test, record and DVOA. Defensively they are sick. Best DVOA in the league first in rushing and second in passing. Offensively their passing game has been on fire this year led by JSN I can easily see this being like the Buffalo game where things just get out of hand for us early, that being said this league really is week to week and Seattle does have the disadvantage of traveling cross country for an early game.  If and big if, the Panthers are able to effectively run the ball and limit the amount of time Seattle's offense has to generate explosive plays we have a path to winning this game.  Seattle fans won't be happy to hear this but bad Darnold is always lurking in the background. He is truly an enigma to root for bc he will have an incredible throw that only a few people can make but then will turn around and throw the most bone headed pick of all time.  I think ultimately we drop this one as ultimately it's human nature to be looking forward to that week 18 game. But man how special would it be to be leaving the stadium on Sunday with a win and a miracle dolphins upset
