The Annual Midnight Vigil...

Mr. Scot

If there is anyway we can trade for Umenyiora then I would be up for that, he played muuuuch better than his press would have you believe and I am just stunned he is on the out with the Giants FO. The ONLY reason they could think of dumping him, would be because he simply is not a team player and is not great in the locker room, which would be a bit of a red flag.

He also appears to be a bit like Pep in that he flashes hot and cold, with his numbers often being inflated with one or two stunning performances.

However he is now a year removed from a tearing the lateral meniscus, which is not the most severe injury but it certainly would have thrown his game off for a while. Simply missing a season will hurt your progress as a player.

That said this is what he achieved:

6 sacks, 14 hits, 19 pressures in 382 pass rush snaps (10.2%)

Compared to Peps

10 sacks, 10 hits and 33 pressures in 446 pass rush snaps (11.8%)

He signed a 6 year deal in 2005 that keeps him under contract through the 2012 season, which means we would get to have a look at him for 3 seasons. His deal also is not too bad as it averages around $7 million a year, however I have no idea if the deal is backloaded at all.

He WOULD be a good pickup considering our situation. I would not give up any picks for him as we simply need those. If they would consider a player + change of picks then that is something that would be worth considering.

Osi Umenyiora

12/24/2005: Signed a six-year, $41 million contract extension through 2012. The deal includes $15 million guaranteed.

2009: $2.55 million (+ $500,000 roster bonus, + $31,250 per-game roster bonuses),

2010: $3.1 million (+ $1.1 million in roster bonuses),

2011: $3.125 million,

2012: $3.975 million,

2013: Free Agent

I'll throw out a trade that I don't realistically see happening, but that I'd consider if I were Hurney.

Dwayne Jarrett to the Giants for Osi Umenyiora.

It makes sense on both sides, honestly. The Giants could use some more receiver options, and we'd get an "anchor" DE in return. Throw in too that both sides are down on the respective player, so a change of scenery might do all parties good.

Of course, straight player for player trades rarely happen these days. And while I think an argument could be made that this is an even trade, I doubt the Giants would see it that way. Most I'd throw in to complete it would be a 6th round pick, so they'd likely balk.

It's an idea, though.

The Giants have a top 3 receiver in Steve Smith (USC) and an excellent #1 pick in Hakeem Nicks as well as a pretty good stable behind those 2. Can't imagine why they'd give up Osi for our trash.

But this is the year Jarrett breaks out. How can we honestly not give him one more year to bloom?(Hint of sarcasm).

Jarrett for Umenyiora would be a great example of what Jimmy Johnson used to call "a fair trade".

His definition of a fair trade was a guy saying "I'm gonna screw ya, but I don't want you to realize it".

The spin would have to be that Jarrett was the missing piece the Giants corps needs to take the next step.

Valid? Probably not, but that's how I'd try to sell it

Man i cant wait the annual midnight vigil is the next best thing to the first game of the season.:D

Admittedly, it's often anticlimactic for Panther fans because of how our front office operates. There was, however, the one year that we had a couple post-midnight signings. If I remember right, it was Justin Hartwig and Kemo.

For me though, I always enjoy seeing who makes the first noise, even if it isn't us.

Looks like the NFL is actually considering letting teams get a head start.

PFT:Panthers not the only victim of Peppers tampering

That's one of the reasons why the NFL has been considering a change in the rules that would allow conversations between the agents for looming free agents and potentially interested teams before the clock strikes 12 on the first day of the new league year. The league knows that tampering is rampant. It's so bad that, as we've said in the past, some teams that previously followed the rules realized that they were putting themselves at a competitive disadvantage by doing so. And so they started tampering, too.

So the solution to people breaking the rule is to change the rule?

Easy way out in my opinion.

Valid, but I don't think it's all that bad an option in this case.

I don't see the harm in letting guys have a bit of a head start, not as long as it applies equally to all parties.
