Panther's positioning themselves for greatness

House

Recommended Posts

For the last few years the Panthers have been running on the ragged edge of the cap year after year. How they got to that position is somewhat complicated.

Part of it was the excitement of the FO upon going to the SB. They had a very good core of players that they felt they needed to lock up. So they handed out some large contracts to those players that were deemed essential. While pretty much everybody they paid was worth it at the time, it came back to bite them in the ass. Which leads us to reason #2.

Some very bad luck struck the Panthers in the form of star players with carreer ending/hampering injuries. Morgan suddenly become a paper doll, Davis fell apart, Peppers never reached his potential and even regressed some, Delhomme never became a better QB and lost his mojo.

Key FA that had everyone buzzing never panned out. Lucas, Wahle, Hartwig, Kemo (he never was worth the money). This was not so much the FO not doing their homework but just shitty luck.

All of these things coupled with young rising stars and the need to keep replacing the defunct pieces forced the Panther's into cap hell. They were paying for players that were not playing and needing money to pay their young guns. Forcing them into shady cap management by extending players to create space and manipulating contracts to make them friendly even if just for a year. Hurney's brilliance with the cap became his biggest downfall.

That all leads me to why the Panther's are positioning themselves for greatness now. They are using the uncapped year to clean the books and start over. They are making wise decisions on who is a key element and who is, no matter how good, just overpaid bagagge.

Some people on here are of the mind that JR is just being cheap and trying to help the NFL while hurting the team. The exact oppositte is true. JR is positioning this team so that in the years to come we will be cap friendly and loaded with great young talent. If the cap is gone for good then he has positioned this team to be cost friendly yet competitive. Depending on how the FO handles a few key future decisions, the type of team players come to not to get paid big bucks but to win championships.

honestly only one of the cuts was questionable, and it's only been free agency for like a day and a half.

let's wait before we start burning poo down.

I do not feel JR is being cheap. The cuts made so far were ones that many saw coming.

Jake- should have been done b4 the extension.

Kemo- injury was fairly significant and we were on the line for some money.

Landon Johnson- backup linebacker who is easily replaced.

Diggs- an upgrade will be available if not already on the roster with Connor or Anderson.

Lewis- with Ed Johnson signing and the upcoming bonus he was expendable.

All these moves were made to get younger and free up money to extend our core players. I see nada wrong with it. I also trust the Panthers to draft well.

lets not forget about the FA that probably wont be back:

Tyler Brayton

A.J. Feeley (rams)

Louis Leonard

Rhys Lloyd

Josh McCown

Muhsin Muhammad

Julius Peppers (bears)

Quinton Teal

Hollis Thomas

Tank Tyler

Keydrick Vincent

Dante Wesley

Rob Pettiti

and the restricted players we could still lose (not without compensation)

James Anderson

Thomas Davis

Jeff King

Louis Leonard

Richard Marshall

Matt Moore

Tank Tyler

C.J. Wilson

You really DO NOT understand the RFA process....do you?

We will not lose Anderson, Leonard, Tyler, and prob Marshall. Even if a team offers them a contract, we have the right to match that contract and sign them. This allows players (cough...cough...Marshall) who think their value is more than it really is to be set straight.

If someone offers him a fair contract, we will match it and sign him. If someone is willing to overpay, we let him go and take a 2nd round pick. If Marshall really believes he is worth a huge contract, he will be a UFA next year. If we lose him then (someone over paying him), then we get nothing.

Therefore, the Panthers have done a very good job tendering the RFA's.

    • I think everyone says Mike Evans because of size, but really they have different strengths and play styles.  Tmac is better on intermediate routes and not nearly as good at contested catches.
    • At this point, it is criminal to go into the 2026 training camp/OTA's with XL penciled in as a #2 WR. The team must upgrade, either through free agency or the draft. If he cannot give 100% effort on significantly less snaps as a #4-6 WR(players like Tremayne have done that consistently) then I don't think you have a player worth rostering beyond the trade deadline. Offensively, we eventually have to upgrade to an NFL starting caliber C. It's been almost the length of time from Gross to Ikey since Kalil retired and we have below average to terrible C play. Love Mays as a BC-esque utility backup but he will never be an above average long term starting C.  The TE room is one of the worst in the NFL but it's a low usage position in this offense, so the investments are likely to be small, if any. I would never expect to see an elite TE in a Dave Canales offense. 100% agree on OL depth. We actually aren't bad there but BC will be gone, Mays is a UFA, Corbett is a UFA and Zavala has been both injured and bad. We have to bolster that depth again or resign guys like Mays and Corbett to keep that depth somewhat stable.
    • Bingo. The dude is a baller no doubt and I'd love to have him in a vacuum but like you said he's gonna fetch a haul so the only teams it really makes sense for are teams with an overall good roster who they feel an edge rusher like Crosby would out them over the top in terms of competing for SBs. I'd be looking st teams like the Pats, Bucs, Ravens, Seahawks, etc. It wouldn't be shocking to see him moved. He may be more valuable to a rebuilding team in the form of the draft assets he'd fetch than he is on the field. He should still have several more good years in the tank at 28 but by the time the Raiders can reasonably expect to rebuild he's gonna be on the decline.
