Productve Off-Season For The Panthers

Let's face it-Panthers fans are concerned, and genuinely should be. A disappointing 8-8 season in 2009 began an onset of questions and a general feeling of uneasiness for the future of the team.

The Panthers organization, however, has been anything but inactive during their current off-season. With the absence of Carolina veterans such as Peppers and Hoover along with many defensive players, fans have been anxiously awaiting the 2010 NFL draft (April 22nd). In addition to these cuts, quarterback, Jake Delhomme, was also released. It also does not help that head coach, John Fox, is on shaky grounds after not living up to the teams previous 2008 season. With all of these changes being made, it is easy to see that Carolina is trying to build a "younger" team.

Given the impression that Carolina is looking for new, more youthful athleticism makes the start of free agency signing even more exciting. Who will be these veterans' replacements? To start off, it is certain that Matt Moore will be taking over the role as quarterback. Another strategy Carolina took towards building a "young" team was by signing NY Jets free agent, Wallace Wright, to hopefully replace the 15-year seasoned WR Mushin Muhammad who, by this season, became an unrestricted free agent. With Peppers being welcomed into the windy city and Tyler Brayton being put on unrestricted free agency, there is no doubt that Carolina will also take steps toward adding some much needed depth to the DE position.

Regardless of the troubles Carolina faced as a team this past season, John Fox and general manager Marty Hurney, have been not only taking large risks, but strategic advances this off-season to ensure a new Carolina Panthers football team going into the 2010 NFL season.

They think Wright was brought in to replace Moose.

    • In May of 2026, it looks like a challenging schedule...and it probably is.  I rarely listen to the "strength of schedule" conversations that light up social media this time of year. Each year teams improve and decline. I think there's chunks of the year we need to take care of business and the week 5 bye is not desired.  I do think if we don't hit the bye week at 3-1, it's going to be a major uphill battle given the schedule in front of us. This season falls on three people, regardless of schedule strength: Canales, Bryce, Evero.  Canales: Finally can truly coach all aspects of the team and not focus with gameday prep for OC duties anymore. He drives the bus and needs to get these guys in position to win each week. There's no way vets come in and put it on the line every week to watch our QB sh!t the bed (See: SF game last year). Bryce: Despite everyone's obsession with thinking Bryce is a guaranteed extension, I think this year will truly be his "prove it" year. If he comes out the way he has the past three years, I really don't see how vets and coaches can continue to put him under center long-term. He might play out that fifth year as the starter, but I think next offseason his long-term replacement is found. I also think there's no excuses with the weapons and commitment we've made on offense to insulate him with every possible weapon.  Evero: Best personnel he's had since he's been here...no excuses. Figure out how to blitz effectively. Figure out how to use CBs whose strengths are press/man. Figure out how to utilize a talented front-7 to get the hell of the field. Outside of FS and maybe....maybe ILB, there are few weaknesses on this unit.
    • Canales can never get his teams ready in the first week of the season so far. Hope that changes or Ben Johnson is going to take his azz to school.
